Are Maddie and Reagan really twins? You Season 5 new cast explained

Maddie and Reagan in You Season 5

Reagan and Maddie Lockwood are newcomers to the You Season 5 cast of characters, and while they might be twins, their personalities are very different.

The fifth and final chapter of the thriller series has landed on Netflix, seeing Penn Badgley reprise his role as obsessive antihero Joe Goldberg. Thanks to the events of You Season 4, he’s able to reclaim his identity, get his son Henry back, and return to New York.

None of this would be possible if it weren’t for his other half Kate Lockwood. After Joe killed her father, Kate’s now the powerful CEO of the Lockwood Corporation, and she’s determined to make good on her promise of focusing on philanthropic activities.

Of course, this manages to rub a few employees up the wrong way, including Kate’s half-sister and Lockwood CFO, Reagan. Madison “Maddie” isn’t as driven as her twin Reagan, but she has motives of her own. Warning: spoilers ahead!

Amazingly, no. Even though their personalities are very different, Maddie and Reagan Lockwood are played by one actress – Anna Camp – in You Season 5.

You may recognize Camp as Sarah Newlin in the HBO vampire series True Blood and Aubrey Posen in the Pitch Perfect movies. She’s also appeared in Murder at Yellowstone City, The Good Wife, and Hysteria.

The actress spoke with Netflix about the difference between her characters, saying, “Reagan is not a fan of Kate being in the leadership position at Lockwood Corp. She thinks that it should have been hers all along.

“At the end of the day, Reagan has decided that she’s going to literally do whatever it takes to get it.”

Reagan is rather uptight to say the least, despite seemingly having everything: the career, the husband (Harrison, played by Pete Ploszek), and their daughter Gretchen. But Camp said her costume helped her get into the role.

“I had my hair back, pulled tight, I was wearing black, and I found myself walking around on set feeling very confident, excited to go in and do the scene,” she said.

As for Maddie, she’s still searching for meaning in her life. She enjoys partying and flirting (especially with Joe, who she calls “Boo-boo”). But she’s a lot kinder than her twin.

“She hasn’t really found the love of her life,” Camp added. “Maddie hasn’t really found her place in the world either, because she was always put down so much by Reagan. So, there’s a lot of tension there and competition between the two of them.”

What happens to the twins in You Season 5?

Maddie and Reagan in the cage in You Season 5

Maddie ends up killing Reagan (more on this shortly), and she gets her happily ever after with Harrison and Gretchen. Trust me, she’s not evil – it was all Joe and Reagan’s doing.

You see, Reagan tries to swoop in and have Kate impeached from the Lockwood company, as she’s not happy with all of the charitable donations Kate’s been making as CEO.

Against Kate’s wishes, Joe kidnaps Reagan and puts her in his trusty cage – except he got the wrong twin. It was an easy mistake to make, as at the time of the kidnapping, Maddie was hooking up with Reagan’s husband, Harrison.

The pair have been having an affair, which sounds way worse on paper. But Maddie later explains that she’s always been in love with Harrison, whereas Reagan doesn’t have feelings for him and their marriage is all for show.

What’s more, Reagan forced Maddie to serve as the surrogate for their daughter to preserve her looks, making Gretchen Maddie’s biological child.

Eventually, Joe manages to get both twins in the cage, and he says the only way for Maddie to make it out alive is for her to kill Reagan. Since Maddie’s diabetic, she can do so by injecting Reagan with her insulin pen.

At first, she refuses to carry out his twisted desires. However, they get into an argument in the cage, with Reagan attempting to gaslight Maddie into believing the surrogacy was her idea.

Maddie reveals that she nearly died during childbirth, but Reagan doesn’t show an ounce of remorse.

“I know you could’ve died, sweetie. And so did Harrison. And the doctors said we might have to make an agonizing choice: you or the baby,” she says.

“But you know what? That would’ve been the easiest decision I ever had to make. You have been in here a week and nobody’s missed you. That’s because you are expendable, Maddie.

“The lesser twin. The spare. You are completely and utterly irrelevant.”

Knowing that either both of them die or just Reagan, Maddie ultimately makes the decision to save herself, injecting Reagan with the insulin pen.

When Joe lets her out, he forces her to pretend to be Reagan, using the CCTV footage of her killing her sister to keep her silent.

Does Maddie die?

Not only does Maddie make it to the end of You Season 5, but she also gets her own happy ending. As well as being reunited with Harrison and Gretchen, she’s now pregnant with twins.

Earlier on, before Joe’s house of cards topples, he manages to frame Harrison and Maddie for Reagan’s murder. However, Harrison sacrifices himself, saying he acted alone in order for Maddie to be free.

This leaves her alone and devastated, and after a few too many drinks, she visits Mooney’s bookstore. As an act of revenge, she locks Joe in the basement and sets the store on fire.

No one dies in the blaze, and when Joe is finally caught for his long list of crimes, Harrison is freed. As narrated by Bronte/Louise, Joe’s latest and last love interest in the Netflix show, “Charges against Harrison Jacobs for the murder against his wife Reagan were dropped.

“That himbo was in jail for 48 hours and somehow managed to emerge with a prison tattoo. Maddie Lockwood was tried for both arson and her sister’s murder. Circumstances being what they were, she didn’t have to serve time.

“She went to rehab for her pill addiction, gave her sister a $2 million viking funeral in Long Island Sound, and now she’s expecting… twins.”
