The Netflix true crime docu-series The Pharmacist is in the spotlight once more, with focus turning to where Dan Schneider (the activist, not the Nickelodeon mogul) is now.
While there’s plenty of new documentaries hitting streaming this month, the Fatal Facts of Fentanyl podcast has revisited the 2020 series, which follows Schneider’s journey from a grieving father to a justice-seeking activist after his son, Danny, was killed in a drug-related shooting in 1999.
As he investigates, the small-town pharmacist uncovers a shocking opioid crisis unfolding in his own Louisiana community, driven by corrupt doctors and the unchecked power of pharmaceutical companies (including Purdue Pharma, the focus of Netflix series Painkiller).
The Fatal Facts of Fentanyl examines the case in a bid to continue its mission of tackling the illicit fentanyl crisis in the US, and it shares an update on where Schneider is now.
Dan Schneider continues activism after Netflix documentary
Schneider continues to devote his energy in combating the opioid crisis, including the rising use of fentanyl, in the US. He is married to his wife Annie, and the couple have a daughter named Kristi together.
The Louisiana resident founded the Tunnel of Hope movement, which aims to tackle the opioid crisis and raise awareness, and offers the opportunity to join the cause, donate, and provide a platform for individuals who’ve been impacted.
Schneider appears on the podcast episode to share his story and try to protect other families from suffering the same grief as his family.
As stated in the description, “His mission still carries on today in his relentless fight to bring awareness and education of the illicit fentanyl crisis plaguing our country causing countless deaths to our kids and young adults.”
You can keep tabs on Schneider’s efforts on his Instagram page, where he recently launched a GoFundMe for Shane Madding, a witness who also appeared in the Netflix documentary.
As stated by Schneider, “Her courage to come forward with information that solved the murder of my son gave my family peace and closure.
“While we still ache for Danny’s loss, we are eternally grateful for Shane and her bravery. She risked everything to help my family and she has since become a part of our extended family.”
The GoFundMe was set up after Madding was diagnosed with kidney failure, leaving her unable to work. So far, it has raised $4650 of its $25k goal – if you’re able to donate, you can do so here.
