When Calls the Heart Season 12 Episode 7 was the most dangerous episode yet – and it almost looked completely different thanks to its leading duo.
The last time we took a trip to Hope Valley, Elizabeth and Nathan got themselves caught up in a crime-filled fiasco. The double-coin investigation has been in play for multiple episodes, leading Nathan straight to no-gooder Toddy Davis.
After a visit to Union City, the couple meet Toddy and his wife Trudie, immediately getting invited to a party. They have to assume fake identities and create a fictional backstory about how they met on the spot. Episode 7 ended with them getting away with it, as Nathan gets one step closer to taking down Toddy’s crime operation.
It’s a tense storyline, but it almost didn’t look like the version we saw. When Calls the Heart stars Erin Krakow and Kevin McGarry revealed they pushed for one major element to be changed.
Elizabeth and Nathan’s duet was nearly different in When Calls the Heart Season 12
In an interview on The Edify Show, Krakow and McGarry revealed the song Elizabeth and Nathan sing together at the party – a huge part of their fake backstory – was originally completely different.

“‘For Me And My Gal’ was the original one. And then, Erin and I kind of talked [that the song was] too fast,” McGarry explained. “And we wanted one that was more to Nathan and Elizabeth’s story. So we switched it to ‘You Made Me Love You.’”
In the episode, Nathan brings Elizabeth up to speed on what’s going on, explaining Toddy is the key to the Great Train Robbery. He briefs them on their joint backstories as “shady coin dealers,” just before they’re whisked onto the dancefloor. Elizabeth pretends to drink and butter up Trudy for more information, who appears to be trying to do the same to her.
When Toddy joins the conversation later on, their story appears to unravel. Nathan uses a real-life memory to explain how he fell in love with “Diane,” leaving Elizabeth astounded. Nathan and Elizabeth later sing a duet of ‘You Made Me Love You’ for the crowd to much applause.

“This song and dance moment in the middle of the show, it’s so much fun to shoot because we’ve never done it before. It was a lot of fun,” McGarry continued.

However, the fun isn’t set to continue for much longer. Another interview with the pair confirmed a much more “intense” storyline is on the way for the second half of When Calls the Heart Season 12 – something so dark it could “shatter” Hope Valley.
“There’s a big one coming,” McGarry told Swooon. “It’s very poignant to the time we are in, 1921, and not only does it shatter their world, it shatters the entire community. It’s an intense thing that happens.”
