Weapons fans have a heartbreaking theory about the seven hot dog lunch

The hot dog lunch in Weapons.

Weapons is quickly becoming a horror phenomenon, and one of the movie’s most viral scenes appears to pay homage to Zach Cregger’s late friend Trevor Moore.

Weapons is everywhere at the moment. The movie opened with a whopping $42.5 million haul in US cinemas over the weekend, while it currently has 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.

We concur with that acclaim, writing in our five-star Weapons review that the film does “everything a good horror movie should, delivering chills and scares via a story that gets under your skin, before concluding two hours of tense set-up with a truly wild pay-off.”

There’s also been wild speculation around the movie over whether Weapons is demonic, and a dark theory that makes the movie even scarier has emerged. Now, a moment from the movie that’s gone viral appears to have a more heartbreaking connection to the real world. Warning: minor spoilers ahead!

Viral Weapons moment pays homage to Zach Cregger’s best friend

Near the end of Weapons, Marcus and Terry Miller sit down for a lunch of potato chips, carrots, ranch dressing, cookies, and seven hotdogs topped with mustard.

Viewers have had fun sharing images of the meal, and pointing out that seven is a lot for two people, as well as an odd number, begging the question, who gets the extra sausage?

But the scene appears to have a deeper meaning. Weapons writer-director Zach Cregger has already spoken about how the movie was inspired by the sudden death of his friend and collaborator Trevor Moore.

The filmmaker told EW: “Someone very, very, very close to me died suddenly and, honestly, I was so grief-stricken that I just started writing Weapons, not out of any ambition, but just as a way to reckon with my own emotions.”

Eagle-eyed fans have clocked that the specific number of hotdogs connects to a sketch that Cregger and Moore made for their TV series The Whitest Kids U’Know.

Titled ‘Hot Dog Timmy,’ the skit stars Moore as a doctor asking a patient questions about his diet. Timmy reveals that he eats seven hot dogs per day before lunch, though when the doc interrogates further, it becomes clear that Timmy hits that total by lunch, meaning “on second thought, that number might be a little low.”

So as well as being a strange meal for the Millers to chow down on, the seven hot dog lunch also appears to be a touching tribute to Cregger’s late friend.
