With a bunch of new movies in the works, as well as several new TV shows, the future of Star Wars is bright.
Some projects don’t have confirmed release dates yet, so it’s hard to say what the exact Star Wars timeline will look like in the next few years. However, there are plenty of confirmed films and shows to get excited about, including a new project that sees director Shawn Levy team up with actor Ryan Gosling.
The following is therefore all the new live-action projects in the works, kicking off the next Star Wars movie, and working our way up to some disappointing Rian Johnson news…
The Mandalorian & Grogu — May 22, 2026
DisneyWhile we first thought The Mandalorian Season 4 would end this adventure, Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau have a bigger plan in action.
As announced on January 9, 2024, The Mandalorian and Grogu, a feature-length film, is tying together all the disparate story threads from various Disney+ shows. It’s to be the culmination of the storytelling done in the Star Wars series and is being steered by Filoni; Star Wars’ Infinity War, if you will.
The Mandalorian & Grogu is expected to be released on May 22, 2026, while footage screened at Star Wars Celebration in 2025 featured Mando killing snowtroopers in an AT-AT, Grugo swimming underwater and levitating a droid, and a first look at Jeremy Allen White’s Rotta the Hut and Sigourney Weaver in her Star Wars debut.
Star Wars: Starfighter — May 28, 2027
Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy has been developing a Star Wars movie for the last three years, and his longtime collaborator Jonathan Tropper has been working on the script for just as long.
Little is known about the film’s subject matter, aside from the fact that it takes place five years after the events of Rise of Skywalker, focusing on a brand new protagonist played by Ryan Gosling.
Speaking at Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, Gosling called it “a great story with great and original characters,” and a film that features “so much heart and adventure.”
Untitled Carlton Cuse/Nick Cuse series — TBA
On April 21, 2025, Variety reported on a “mysterious new Star Wars series in early development,” from Carlton Cuse and his son Nick Cuse.
Little else was revealed, but both men have a solid track record in TV, with Carlton behind the likes of Lost, Bates Motel, The Strain, and most recently Pulse, while Nick worked on The Leftovers, Watchmen, and Station Eleven.
Star Wars New Jedi Order — TBA
DisneyBesides the Mando movie, we know most about the vision for this film. Following Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker as she charts a new path, Star Wars New Jedi Order is set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker. We’ll watch Rey attempt to rebuild the Jedi Order from the ground up.
It’ll be directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker and journalist Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, but the movie recently hit a bump in the road, when writer Steven Knight left the project, having worked on the script for an extended period of time.
That may have been down to creative differences. Or alternatively, his departure might have had something to do with a Simon Kinberg-shaped disturbance in the Force (see below).
Either way, in January of 2025, George Nolfi was announced as the film’s screenwriter. Nolfi’s previous credits include Ocean’s Twelve, The Bourne Ultimatum, and the Adjustment Bureau.
Ahsoka Season 2 – TBA
In January 2024, LucasFilm confirmed that Ahsoka would return for a second season, with creator Dave Filioni also set to return.
Rosario Dawson portrayed the beloved Jedi in the series’ first season after winning over fans during her brief appearance during S2 of The Mandalorian.
At the end of the first season, Ahsoka defeats Morgan while General Thrawn retreats. As such, we expect Thrawn to play a large role in the second season, with Ezra Bridger also set to return.
During Star Wars Celebration 2025, it was confirmed that Hayden Christensen would also be back as Anakin Skywalker, and that fan-favorite Admiral Ackbar will feature in the series.
New Star Wars trilogy – TBA
Lucasfilm has closed a deal with Simon Kinberg to develop a trilogy of Star Wars films. Kinberg will write the trio and produce them with Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy.
As revealed by Deadline, Lucasfilm has signed on Simon Kinberg to help develop a brand new Star Wars movie trilogy. The trilogy is expected to follow the events of Episode 9 and serve as the next three episodes in the mainline series.
These three films are expected to serve as the next chapter of the Skywalker Saga and will be produced alongside Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy.
However, other Insiders claim that they will be standalone projects. Kinberg is no stranger to the Star Wars universe, having helped co-create the iconic Star Wars Rebels animated series and worked as a consultant on The Force Awakens.
Star Wars: Lando Movie — TBA
Disney / LucasfilmDespite being revealed in 2020, and originally intended as a spinoff series, not much has been announced about the upcoming Lando project. It’s meant to star Donald Glover as a young Lando, as seen in Han Solo.
However, part-way through 2023 we learned it had evolved from a mere Disney+ series to a full-fledged movie… apparently.
An exact plot or release window has yet to be announced; it seems to be one of the projects that needs to be saved from development hell.
Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Movie — TBA
Like many other projects on this list, Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie has no concrete details. We do know that it is still going ahead and that Waititi will reportedly have a role in the film.
Given that the director typically appears in most of his projects, this detail isn’t exactly surprising. However, it is interesting to speculate what type of character he will play.
Waititi has shown great enthusiasm for the universe, and he and Disney have denied rumors the film has been shelved.
Untitled James Mangold film — TBA
Also announced during the 2023 Star Wars Celebration event, we know James Mangold is set to write and direct his own Star Wars film. The working title seems to be Dawn of the Jedi, although there’s no official word.
The project is set to chart new territory for the franchise as a whole, being set roughly 25,000 years before A New Hope.
Described by Lucasfilm as a “biblical epic,” the film will lift the veil on the “dawn of the Jedi,” revealing how the religion came to be and how the first force sensitives discovered their powers.
Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy — delayed indefinitely
DisneyThe Last Jedi director Rian Johnson was hoping to make a Star Wars spin-off Trilogy, and previously said he was in regular contact with Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy about the proposed movies.
But during an interview with Rolling Stone in July 2025, Johnson revealed that “Nothing really happened with it. We had a great time working together, and they said, ‘Let’s keep doing it.’ I said, ‘Great!’ I would kick ideas around with Kathy.
‘The short version is Knives Out happened. I went off and made Knives Out, and was off to the races, busy making murder mysteries. It’s the sort of thing if, down the line, there’s an opportunity to do it, or do something else in Star Wars, I would be thrilled. But right now I’m just doing my own stuff, and pretty happy.”
When asked how far along he was with the story, Johnson said: “It was all very conceptual… there was never any outline or treatment or anything.” So basically, don’t hold your breath for this one!
