At a loss for what to watch on TV right now? Well, if you’re a fan of telenovelas and soapy melodrama, Netflix has just dropped the record-breaking Season 1 of Until You Burn.

March 2025 is relatively quiet on the streaming front. Sure, there’s Daredevil: Born Again for Marvel fans, and Good American Family will be a must-watch for true crime lovers.

As for Netflix, its big release is undoubtedly Adolescence, a searing, impeccable mini-series that deals with toxic masculinity, struggling school systems, family dynamics, and the rising influence of social media.

There’s just one problem: it’s only four episodes long, and there most likely won’t be a Season 2. But if you’re a fan of all things drama (including the ‘melo’ kind), Until You Burn is worth adding to your watchlist.

Netflix’s Until You Burn becomes global sensation

Until You Burn originally aired in Colombia under the title Escupiré Sobre Sus Tumbas (translated to: I Spit on Their Graves) from October 2024 to February 2025, where it went on to become the most watched Colombian series.

According to network Caracol Televisión, in its premiere it became the number one on primetime telly, with five million viewers tuning in, giving it a 37.3% audience share. The new TV show surpassed its main competitor, which earned a 31.4% share.

Although viewers in Colombia had to wait for episodes to drop weekly, now that it’s finished airing, the entire 60-episode (yes, 60) first season has landed on Netflix (as of March 17, 2025).

This is another reason Until You Burn stands out, making it one of the longest first seasons for a live-action series on the streaming service. This extensive episode count aligns with the traditional telenovela format, which often features numerous episodes per season.

For comparison, the Colombian series Bolívar also had a substantial first season with 60 episodes.

What’s it about?

Until You Burn is a soapy telenovela that delves into themes of love, vengeance, deception, and the quest for truth. The narrative centers on Brian O’Connor, an ex-convict determined to uncover the circumstances surrounding his brother Sonny’s death.

Initially deemed a suicide, O’Connor believes there’s more to it. He assumes the identity of Vinicio Gallo, a distinguished ship captain, and infiltrates his brother’s inner circle on the Caribbean Coast.

This includes the elite Obregón Martelli family, who he suspects are implicated in his brother’s death. His mission involves seducing Sonny’s former fiancée and other women connected to the case to extract information and administer his own form of justice.

Developed by Juana Uribe, Ana María Parra, and Héctor Chiquillo, the Netflix series is an adaptation of Boris Vian’s 1946 French novel I Spit on Your Graves, reimagined within the Colombian Caribbean context.

Who’s in the cast?

Cristian Gamero brings the character of Brian O’Connor to life in Until You Burn. This isn’t his first time starring in a series, having previously appeared in Luis Miguel: The Series. A number of his other acting credits include El Señor de los Cielos and Sin Fin.

María Elisa Camargo, meanwhile, takes on the role of Katherine Andrea Obregón Martelli, who Sonny proposes to in Episode 1. Camargo first rose to fame on The X Factor Colombia, before making a name for herself on the small screen.

She’s particularly well-known in the telenovela genre, having appeared in Bajo el Mismo Cielo, En Otra Piel, Verano de Amor, and Juego de Mentiras. Fun fact: Camargo also voiced Valeria Garza in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.

Essined Aponte plays Victoria “Vicky” Iguarán, a police officer who becomes entangled in the investigation into Sonny’s death. Aponte appeared in the hit TV series S.W.A.T., as well as shows like Consuelo, The Roar of the Butterflies, and The Queen and the Conqueror.

Other cast members in Until You Burn include:

  • Mario Camacho as Sonny O’Connor
  • Rita Bendek as Gina Martelli
  • Cristina García as Nicole Obregón
  • Leonardo Acosta as Raymundo Obregón
  • Melanie Dell’Olmo as Melissa Slevi
  • Carolina Serrano as Danna Mendosa
  • Isa Mosquera as Marisol Lizcano
  • Carlos Aguilar as Javier Fernández
  • Manolo Alzamora as Dylan
  • Juan Fernando Sánchez as Federico Pumarejo
  • José Narváez as Antonio Miranda

Speaking to Eclair Magazine about her role in the new TV show, Camargo said, “What drew me to this role is how layered and real she is. She’s not your typical over-the-top villain or flawless star – she exists in that gray area, full of contradictions.

“She has a deep love for her community but struggles with a broken family dynamic. She’s insecure, constantly masking her vulnerability, and when a traumatic event shakes her world (no spoilers!), all of her weaknesses are exposed.

“This leads her into a toxic dynamic with someone new in her life, and from there, things spiral in ways she never expected. I love being part of intense thrillers, but what made this even more exciting was the challenge of keeping the performance subtle – holding back instead of going big.

“There’s also so much sensuality, dance, and music woven into the story, which makes it even more immersive. And shooting in the Colombian Caribbean? Absolute heaven!”
