The Way Home could have one big change if it returns for Season 4

The fight to get The Way Home Season 4 greenlit is well and truly on, with it looking less likely as Season 3 closes out. However, there’s one change that could be the deciding compromise.

By this point, every Ponderer knows there’s a heavy effort to get The Way Home Season 4 off the ground. Typically, seasons would have been renewed by this many episodes in, and after declining viewership, things aren’t looking great for Port Haven.

So fans have taken matters into their own hands. As well as increased social media efforts, a petition has gained thousands of signatures in a matter of days. Now, it’s up to Hallmark to take notice and listen… and that could still go either way.

With The Way Home Season 3 ending this week, what would it effectively take for Season 4 to happen? Alongside a healthy dose of optimism, there’s one big change that could work in its favor.

The Way Home Season 4 could stream exclusively on Hallmark+

Remember how there was a big to-do when Season 3 first started airing because its weekly premiere on The Hallmark Channel was being axed? While original plans of making The Way Home Season 3 exclusive to streaming were nixed, it could be the change that saves Season 4.

Cast your mind back. On December 29, 2024, it was announced Hallmark would be streaming The Way Home Season 3 exclusively on its new streaming service. This means unlike When Calls the Heart Season 12, The Way Home would be going direct to app.

However, due to “overwhelming demand,” Hallmark changed its plans a day later on December 30, reverting back to each episode premiering on the Hallmark Channel. It’s been that way ever since, with episodes appearing on Hallmark+ 24 hours later.

But what if the way to save Season 4 was to revert to their original plan? The binge-worthy TV show has always been considered a ‘risk’ for the channel, deviating from its original format to introduce more complicated concepts and adult content. Clearly, there’s now not much of a home for it on the Hallmark Channel itself.

However, whether fans would actually tune in if it went to streaming only remains unclear. One argued “I’d give up another streaming service for Hallmark+,” with another weighing in “It’s already the only way I can watch it. I don’t have a Hallmark channel on live TV or anything unless I subscribe and stream; satellite isn’t an option where I live either.”

Others disagree, pointing out “No. Love this show but cannot pay for another streaming channel,” with a fourth adding “Depends on where it would stream. Not Hallmark+, no. But I’d take the nine month delay or whatever.”

Currently, plans start from $7.99 per month, with Hallmark+ having access to the channel’s entire back catalog. Where this differs slightly is for fans outside the US. The monthly price is about the same (it’s £4.99 for UK viewers), but the access to content differs.

As is true for many streaming services, not all the same titles are available in different regions. So far, it seems The Way Home is US only. So as well as being an extra expense, not everybody is guaranteed the content.

Hallmark has yet to make any official statement on the future of The Way Home.
