This is why Colton’s death couldn’t have been stopped in The Way Home Season 3

Colton in The Way Home

Back in Season 1, Alice and Kat failed to stop Colton from dying. In The Way Home Season 3, it felt like he was going to live for longer, but that couldn’t be the case. Warning: spoilers ahead!

After Jacob’s disappearance in 1999, Colton seemed so overcome with grief that he died in a car crash in 2000. Thanks to the magic of time travel, The Way Home Season 3 revived him in teenage form.

As well as the 1974 timeline, the season finale saw Alice travel back to 1999 one last time, running into Colton to spill some long-awaited truths about their family. In short, this means Colton knew about everything – including what happened to Jacob – hours before he died.

So couldn’t his death have just been stopped, then? Absolutely not, and the binge-worthy TV show made a clear case for why.

The Way Home Season 3’s road leads to Alice

When adult Colton and Alice meet for the final time, Alice gets emotional. Why can’t she just tell Colton exactly what happens so they can stop the bad things from happening? “This road we’re on leads to you,” Colton replies.

Before that was an explosion of revelations for the two. “You know who mom really is?” Alice says as Colton shares his findings. “Alice… are you my granddaughter?” Colton says, to which she nods before they embrace. Colton explains the pond really did never work for him again, convinced no good would ever come from telling Del what it could do.

Colton asks if Jacob ever comes back. Alice asks when it is, with Colton saying it’s February 2000… the day he died. “Jacob will come home, Colton,” she replies, also letting slip he still won’t get to see Jacob again. Colton remembers Kat saying she “lost her dad” which led her to having Alice, understanding he can’t change events to come.

I know what you’re asking. Surely the Alice who’s already come to Season 1 will now remember everything that’s happened between the pair in Season 3, changing this timeline anyway? Of course not!

When Alice arrives in 1999 intentionally earlier on, Colton says he has “so many questions,” with Alice replying that he can’t ask them at this time. “The Alice that you’ll get to know in 1999 is a different Alice… she’s me, but an earlier me. She hasn’t lived those visits to 1974 yet.” Alice confirms 1999 Alice is brand new to time travel and won’t have any answers to anything.

In short, it’s all one big overloaded and emotional mess (but an incredibly good watch). Whether adult Colton reappears in The Way Home Season 4 remains to be seen, but judging by the final scene, teenage Colton definitely will be.
