Forgotten The Way Home character could be the key to Colton’s time travel

Colton in The Way Home

We’ve known Colton could time travel since The Way Home Season 3 Episode 2, but the how and why remained unclear. They still do (ish), but a character we’ve already forgotten might know more.

For those of you who think Colton is dead in The Way Home, you’re right. Technically, he died in a car wreck in 2000 after his grief for missing son Jacob (that’s a separate story) became too much to bear.

However, Season 3 introduced his teenage self in the 1974 timeline. That seems easy enough to follow, but it’s a little more complicated than that. Teen Colton somehow knows how to time travel through the pond, and he’s already visited Jacob in 1814.

If he’s also visited other timelines – and let’s face it, he probably has – then that complicates everything we’ve learned about Port Haven so far. But one overlooked character most likely holds the answer.

Does Fern have answers to Colton’s time travel in The Way Home?

Remember that strange ’65’ riddle from a few episodes back? It’s been lost in the huge pile of mysteries The Way Home Season 3 has thrown at us and hasn’t been mentioned again. Grandma Fern is likely the person who holds the answers to the Landry family drama, as well as Colton’s truth.

Fern in The Way Home

Back in Episode 3, Kat meets her great-grandma Fern in the woods. The song she sings? “25 first arrived, 25 never tried. 65 thought they died, 65 still alive.” Kat asks Fern if she is lost to which Fern replies, “Don’t tease, I know my way home, Kitty Cat.”

Kat then asks Fern if she knows a Colton Landry, and Fern confirms he’s her grandson. This is basically how we learn Fern is a Landry, and therefore at the top of the present-day family tree.

Considering she’s a lost woman in the woods when we first meet her, chances are she’s recently seen Colton in order for his name to have jogged her memory. This would suggest A) Colton has traveled to multiple timelines, and B) one popular ’65’ theory is completely right.

Ponderers will know Colton once had an older brother, who himself went missing. The year? Oh… around 1965. An ideal explanation for why Colton started time-traveling in the first place would be to find his brother, much like Alice and Kat did for Jacob in Season 1.

Colton in The Way Home Season 3

How Colton even came to realize the pond was a portal is still a mystery, and we probably need to pay Fern another visit to fully understand the Landry family lore. Could he have even broken the pond rules altogether?

As one fan posted on Facebook, “I wonder if he broke the rule by telling someone that he is a TT and he wasn’t supposed to. Like maybe he told Evelyn and afterwards he got scolded by Fern so he learned to be secretive about it. I imagine the Landry TT and the magic of the Pond had to be kept a secret.”

“I have a feeling Fern is a key player and that we will uncover more about her at some point,” a second agreed.”

Will we get any further clarity? That’s anybody’s guess at this stage. But Colton’s future – and past – will undoubtedly be key to the Season 3 finale.
