Ed and Lorraine Warren (the movie versions, that is) are back for one final case. Thankfully, The Conjuring: Last Rites is set to be the most chilling yet.
The Conjuring captivated horror fans with its stunning visuals, exceptional filmmaking, and visual effects. The narrative of the Perron family’s eerie encounters is hailed as one of the standout horror movies in recent times.
The triumphant film gave birth to two follow-ups, The Conjuring 2 and The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It, not to mention several spinoffs (you can check out how to watch them all first).
Now, it’s time for the final farewell with The Conjuring 4, officially titled The Conjuring: Last Rites. Where rumors first thought The Amityville Horror would come into play, the reality confirmed by the new trailer is so much worse.
The Conjuring: Last Rites release date
The Conjuring 4 will be released in theatres on September 5, 2024. It’s the first of the four core movies to be released during the fall.

Last Rites wrapped filming on October 10, 2024 having shot in London, England (previously the setting for The Conjuring 2, if you remember).
According to a report by Deadline, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick returns as a screenwriter, after penning the second and third Conjuring movies. James Wan and Peter Safran, who were producers on all three Conjuring films have also returned in that role.
At CinemaCon, it was confirmed that The Conjuring 4 will be titled The Conjuring: Last Rites, accompanied by an image of the very first Conjuring movie.
The new movie will receive an exclusive theatrical run upon release and is likely to head to Max for its streaming release.

What is it about?
The true story of the Smurl Haunting, which took place between 1974-1989, is set to be the subject of The Conjuring: Last Rites.

Jack and Janet Smurl of West Pittston, Pennsylvania, alleged a demon inhabited their home during this period of time. The demon allegedly caused loud noises and bad odors, threw their dog into a wall, shook their mattress, pushed one of their daughters down a flight of stairs, and physically and sexually assaulted family members.
The Warrens were brought in in 1986, with Ed confirming the demon was “very powerful.” He also claimed he felt a drop in temperature and saw a “dark mass” from inside the home, with the demon once leaving a message on a mirror telling him to “get out.”
The investigation went on for months, with The Warrens trying to get the demon to leave by playing religious music and praying. Ed claimed to have various audiotapes of the demon knocking on walls.
However, the Warrens weren’t the only investigators who came along during the Smurls’ time in the house. The family gained wide press attention and were investigated by clergy, psychologists, and scientific skeptics who all offered alternative explanations.
We’ve also seen their story turned into a book called The Haunted (the same year the Warrens came to visit) and a made-for-TV movie in 1991 of the same name.
It’s expected that The Conjuring: Last Rites will follow the events of 1986 rather than the Smurls’ broader history with the house.
In an interview with Collider on January 2, The Conjuring director James Wan revealed that the fourth installment might be the final entry to feature the Warrens. “[W]e kind of want to just take our time to make sure we get it right and to make sure the emotion of the Warren stories that we want to tell, and moving into, and potentially wrapping up, we just want to make sure that it’s the right thing, the right story that we’re telling.”
