The Chosen star Jonathan Roumie reveals the most “difficult” Season 5 scene to film

Jonathan Roumie as Jesus in The Chosen Season 5

The Chosen Season 5 may be a cause for celebration for fans, but it didn’t come without its challenges for the cast – and one scene was especially “difficult” for Jesus star Jonathan Roumie.

Roumie has the hardest job of anyone in The Chosen cast; lest we forget what Jim Caviezel endured during The Passion of the Christ, even getting struck by lightning.

The importance of the series isn’t lost on him. In other interviews, he’s spoken about how some fans expect a spiritual encounter when they meet him in real life. His performance means a lot to people all around the world, and it’s often lauded as the best portrayal of Jesus Christ ever.

So, there’s a lot of pressure as the inevitability of The Chosen’s story closes in, with Season 5 kicking off the events of Holy Week and bringing us (and Roumie) closer to the crucifixion.

In an interview with Dexerto, Roumie revealed which scene in Season 5 he found “particularly difficult” to film: the Garden of Gethsemane.

“Even just the approach leading up to it was something that… I didn’t know how to do, I didn’t know how I was going to do it,” he explained.

If you’re unfamiliar with what happens in the Garden of Gethsemane in the Bible, it’s where Jesus is arrested, kicking off the events of the Passion.

“The sorrow in my heart is so great that it almost crushes me,” he says, feeling distressed about his impending suffering. I won’t go into too many other details (if you want to spoil it for yourself, you know what book to read), but it will go down as one of the show’s most memorable and emotional scenes.

As well as the Garden of Gethsemane, Roumie also struggled with the Last Supper and “specifically for me, the institution of the Eucharist.”

Again, for those unaware, this happens during the Last Supper in Luke 22:14-20, and it’s when Jesus tells his apostles, “Take this and divide it among you.For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

“This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me,” he says, handing them bread, and with his cup in hand, he adds: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”

It was a lot for Roumie to “wrap his head around as a Catholic… mass is essentially centered around the Eucharist.”

“Imparting that kind of spiritual weight and impact was something that I wanted to make sure that I gave every ounce of strength and devotion to, in that it might impact people in the way that it impacts me and and so many others who celebrate the mass every week.”
