2025 is the year of the King, and one of his most underrated books is now getting a brand new Netflix adaptation.
Fresh off the release of The Monkey, Stephen King fans can start getting excited about another new movie inspired by the horror author’s works.
Not only are we getting big on-screen adaptations of The Long Walk and The Running Man this year, but now, Netflix is dipping into King’s world with a new movie based on his novel Cujo.
It may be a while before the streaming service can release the horror movie, but if done correctly, it has potential to be one of the most exciting new King movies coming out.
Netflix developing Cujo movie based on Stephen King book
It’s early stages, but Deadline has reported that Netflix is currently developing a feature film based on the Cujo novel by Stephen King, with Roy Lee (Barbarian, Death Note) producing.
The book was originally published in 1981, and follows the story of a St. Bernard that turns rabid after being bitten by a bat. After turning into a violent, vicious version of itself, a family is threatened and trapped, trying to fight for their lives.

Cujo already got an adaptation in 1983, with a movie that ended up becoming a box office success, earning $21.2 million against a $6 million budget. In the years since, it’s also developed a cult following.
King also discussed the book in his autobiography, On Writing. He penned the novel during the peak of his drug and alcohol addiction, which meant he didn’t remember much of the process.
He wrote, “There’s one novel, Cujo, that I barely remember writing at all. I don’t say that with pride or shame, only with a vague sense of sorrow and loss. I like that book. I wish I could remember enjoying the good parts as I put them down on the page.”
