When Severance Season 3 is expected to release on Apple TV

Severance Season 3 has got the official green light – and if the makers play their cards right, it could be here sooner rather than later.

Severance has emerged as the crown jewel of Apple TV+, with the second season helping it overtake Ted Lasso as the streaming service’s most-watched series.

It’s also critically acclaimed (check out our five-star Season 2 review) and beloved by fans worldwide, and as it closes in on its much-anticipated (and dreaded) finale, it’s one of the few streaming era shows that’s managed to replicate the water-cooler chatter of normal TV each week.

So, you’re probably already wondering, “Is Season 3 happening? And when is it coming out?” Well, here’s what we know so far (and warning, expect spoilers from Season 2 Episode 10).

Will there be a Season 3 of Severance?

Apple TV has officially renewed Severance for Season 3.

“Making Severance has been one of the most creatively exciting experiences I’ve ever been a part of,” Ben Stiller said in a statement.

“While I have no memory of this, I’m told making Season 3 will be equally enjoyable, though any recollection of these future events will be forever and irrevocably wiped from my memory as well.”

Dan Erickson, the show’s creator, also said: “The idea of getting to make more Severance with the greatest cast and crew on Earth is more thrilling to me than all the world’s finger traps combined. I can’t wait to continue spreading woe, frolic, dread and malice with these truly incredible people.”

Severance has continually exceeded expectations. According to Nielsen, the series has accumulated over three billion streaming minutes since Season 2 premiered in January. Also, the show’s popularity is encouraging other people to watch it; during the week of February 10, 40% of the show’s streaming time was for Season 1.

Apple TV+ shows rarely show up on Nielsen’s rankings, so Severance has rightly been considered a powerhouse in this year’s programming. In other words, why would Apple not renew it for Season 3?

Is there a Severance Season 3 release date?

Adam Scott in Severance Season 2

There’s no release date for Severance Season 3 right now, but it’s expected to be released sometime in 2027 at the absolute earliest.

Lest we forget the three-year gap between Season 1’s “She’s alive!” cliffhanger and the start of Season 2. There were other factors (a pandemic, the Hollywood strikes, alleged behind-the-scenes drama), but Stiller and co. are hoping to turn around another season in a shorter amount of time.

Appearing on the New Heights podcast, Stiller explained: “No, the plan is not to [wait three years]. Hopefully we’ll be announcing what the plan is very soon.”

Creator Dan Erickson told Gizmodo that he’d “certainly like [Season 3]” to come out sooner.

“And the conversations we have had about it, that’s been in the conversation. Because Season 2 actually took about the same amount of time as Season 1,” he explained.

“The difference, of course, is Season 1 nobody knew what the show was and so they weren’t waiting for it. But at the same time, you’re always looking to sort of fine-tune the process and take what works and leave what doesn’t work and streamline things. So, my hope is that if there is a Season 3, it’s going to be sooner.”

In a new interview with Variety, Stiller was firm with how much information he’s willing to give away. “I don’t want to talk about where we’re at in our process,” he said.

A two-year wait for Severance Season 3 seems the most likely, so prepare to be patient.

Who will be in the cast?

Adam Scott is expected to return as Mark in Severance Season 3, alongside the other main players in the cast:

  • Britt Lower as Helly/Helena
  • Zach Cherry as Dylan
  • Patricia Arquette as Harmony Cobel
  • Tramell Tillman as Milchick
  • Dichen Lachman as Gemma/Ms Casey
  • Jen Tullock as Devon
  • Michael Siberry as Jame Eagan

There are two question marks: Burt (Christopher Walken) and Irving (John Turturro). According to Ben Stiller, their story is over “for now” after the end of Episode 9.

“Lumon is a very powerful company, and Burt knows that. He makes this choice, and we don’t know what’s going to happen to Burt after that,” he teased to Variety.

“I get the feeling that what he’s doing is definitely on his own, and he’s probably putting himself at some risk by doing that.”

What could happen in Season 3?

Gemma in Severance Season 2, waiting at the Exports Hall

Season 3 is expected (and hoped) to pick up where Severance Season 2 ended: with Mark and Helly running around the halls of Lumon after Gemma’s escape.

It was a gut-wrenching ending: Gemma watched her husband walk away and condemn himself (like an inverse of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth) almost immediately after they reunited. Meanwhile, Dylan rallied the players in Choreography and Merriment to stand against Milchick, Mr Drummond died, and Irving is probably thousands of miles away.

In an interview with THR, Stiller teased: “I don’t want to give anything away. I think there’s a lot of questions that are posed, and that’s also what I liked about the ending moment in how Dan wrote it.

“When we go to that freeze frame and we go to red – which we haven’t ever had that color, the blood being the first time – but to me it’s sort of a shift of, okay, we’re going into another mode here. This is a lot darker and more dystopian than we’ve seen.”

“You have a responsibility to the audience that you’re going somewhere with it,” Stiller also told Collider.

“That’s always been a part of it for us, really understanding where it’s heading to, and Apple’s been really supportive of that and been sensitive to what the story is and not saying, ‘Okay, this is something that has to keep going as long as it’s successful.’

“It should go as long as the story goes, and that’s something we have an idea of, and we’re working towards as we’re starting up our Season 3 work.”

Don’t expect fan theories to ever steer the series, though. “I think you have to like take all that with a grain of salt and sort of appreciate that everybody has different ideas, but we have to have our own sort of clear idea of what we’re doing that is independent of that,” Stiller told People.
