Severance still needs to answer one huge question about Gemma after Episode 7

Gemma in Severance Season 2 Episode 7

Severance Season 2 Episode 7 finally delivers answers about Gemma, but one big question remains – and we may not like the answer.

For most of Severance’s second season, we’ve only seen Gemma (and Ms Casey) in flashes; flickers of her face as Mark reintegrated, and one particularly heartbreaking scene at the end of Episode 5.

That changes in Episode 7, which focuses almost entirely on Gemma’s experiences on the Testing Floor at Lumon (this is where the Exports Hall leads to) as Mark “journeys” through their memories after his collapse in the sixth episode.

It is a revelatory moment in the show, revealing what the MDR team’s files actually mean (except Cold Harbor) and introducing viewers to a new villain, Dr Mauer. However, it still needs to answer one question.

Did Gemma voluntarily go to Lumon, or was she really in a crash?

According to Mark, Gemma was killed in a car crash (and he even identified the body). In the second season, he knows she’s actually alive and somehow Lumon tricked him – but was she actually in a car accident, or was that all a lie?

In the episode’s closing scenes, we see a flashback from the night Gemma supposedly died. She heads out to a party and he decides to stay at home. Later, two police officers arrive at his door to break the bad news.

Here’s the thing: we don’t know if Lumon caused her to collide with another car and recovered her body, or if she willingly left to go to Lumon, unwittingly becoming the company’s guinea pig and trapping herself deep underground.

The latter seems more likely, given her efforts with Lumon’s fertility clinic (and their subliminal infiltration into her life via surveys and ideographic cards).

Also, she doesn’t act like she’s been kidnapped, nor is she necessarily treated like a prisoner (albeit they definitely don’t want her to go anywhere). She definitely wants to leave (she even tries to escape at the end of Episode 7), but there’s a good chance she agreed to some sort of experimental treatment in the wake of her miscarriage, and given the tension between her and Mark, she thought it was better to keep it a secret.

It’s no longer just a matter of how – it’s a question of why.
