After Severance Season 2 Episode 6, it seems like there’s more to Burt than meets the eye – and there are three hints that he’s secretly working for Lumon.
Burt and Irving have been circling each other since the start of Severance’s second season. In Episode 5, Irving confronted him after spotting him in a car nearby, and Burt confessed that he was curious after the incident with his Innie (remember, he was bashing on his door during the OTC) and the fact he was fired for an “unsanctioned emotional entanglement.”
Their conversation starts off quite fraught, but it quickly becomes quite friendly, to the point Burt invites Irving to his house to have dinner with him and his husband Fields.
It all seems innocent enough, but things get a bit… weird, both on and off-screen in Episode 6.
Why Burt is clearly working for Lumon in Severance

Fields accidentally drops a big clue after one too many glasses of wine: he says they had drinks with Burt’s “Lumon partner” 20 years ago, but the first severed office opened 12 years ago.
Burt tells Fields he should ease up on the booze, and when Irving leaves, Burt insists Fields was drunk and reiterates that he couldn’t have worked for Lumon so long ago, because that was before severance even existed – or so he says.
Secondly, when Irving walks to his car, Burt’s face changes; his smile slips into a serious, almost anxious expression. Given that we saw him spying on Irving earlier in Season 2, it looks like he’s hiding something, and it would make sense if he were a Lumon operative in the outside world.

There’s a third clue in Episode 6. While Irving is eating dinner with Burt, we see Mr Drummond breaking into Irving’s home and rummaging through his stuff – specifically, his lists of every severed employee working at Lumon, including Burt. Could the timing be a coincidence, or was Burt tasked with distracting Irving while Mr Drummond sneaked into his house?
Of course, this is all just speculation – but I’m not the only one with this theory. “Do not trust Burt whatsoever. Getting Irving out of the house so his stuff could be raided?” one Redditor wrote.
“Burt is one of the OG Lumon. There before they invented Severance technology,” another theorized. “Burt IS a f**k,” a third joked, a callback to Dylan’s quote in Severance Season 1.
“So Burt is definitely still with Lumon, right?” a fourth wrote. “So much has happened this episode. Burt is still with Lumon, Helena is a weird stalker, Mark is getting f**ked up with the unsevering procedure. I wonder why Burt and Lumon are so interested in Irving,” a fifth commented.
