The Damona Birthing Retreat could solve Severance Season 2’s biggest problem

Mark in Severance Season 2 and Devon in Severance Season 1

Devon gets to elaborate on her “corporate espionage” plan for Mark in Severance Season 2 Episode 7, and it has everything to do with the Damona Birthing Retreat. Warning: spoilers ahead!

In Season 2 Episode 6, Devon heads into Mark’s house with a new plan to find out what’s going on with Lumon. Little does she realize Mark’s just gone through brain surgery in his dusty basement as part of the reintegration process.

Before she can finish her sentence, he passes out and has a fit, at which point Asal Reghabi rushes in and tries to stablize him. And then the episode ends.

The new episode of the Apple TV+ series is mainly focused on Gemma, but we do get to see the aftermath of the surgery, with Devon pitching her plan – and it’s not the worst idea.

What is the Damona Birthing Retreat?

The Damona Birthing Retreat is a series of rustic, luxury cabins situated in Kier, PE, designed for women to give birth in. We first see it in Severance Season 1, when Devon goes with Ricken to have their baby.

While there, Devon meets a woman named Gabby Arteta, who we later find out is the wife of Senator Angelo Arteta – and they are both patrons of Lumon Industries.

When Devon bumps into Gabby in the outside world, Gabby has no memory of her, meaning she likely underwent the severance procedure so her Outie could avoid the pain of giving birth.

In Season 2 Episode 7, the following morning after Mark’s collapse, he’s alive but still unconscious. Reghabi insists that he’ll be fine and will wake up once he’s ready, but Devon wants to do something about it.

She suggests her plan about heading to the Damona Birthing Retreat, saying it’s where severed individuals become their Innies like Gabby, but Reghabi says it’s “different.” In other words, severed employees at Lumon are different to severed individuals. But what if Devon’s right?

Devon’s plan could solve Severance’s biggest problem

If there is a mechanism to activate the severance chip at the Damona Birthing Retreat, which we know there is in some form, then this might be the only way for Devon and Outie Mark to communicate with his Innie.

Throughout Season 2, they’ve been trying to figure out a way to find out what’s going on with Gemma. In Episode 3, Devon helps her brother make the “who is alive?” lamp to try and get a message to his Innie.

It doesn’t work, as Reghabi points out that their pupils dilate during the transition from Outie to Innie. And as we know, Lumon supposedly has code detectors in its elevators, meaning they’re unable to share messages.

If Devon can somehow get Mark to the retreat, they might be able to activate his Innie and sort a plan. And she is sure Harmony Cobel will be able to help make this happen.

Even though Reghabi’s dead against it, saying Cobel is the embodiment of Lumon, time is running out. The Damona Birthing Retreat might be their best – and only – chance to break through the walls of Lumon and finally uncover the truth.
