Ryan Reynolds apologizes for cutting Rob McElhenney’s Deadpool & Wolverine cameo with hilarious birthday video

Rob McElhenney was originally meant to appear as a TVA guard in Deadpool & Wolverine, but his cameo was left on the cutting room floor. Nearly a year later, Ryan Reynolds has figured out the perfect way to say sorry.
Reynolds and McElhenney aren’t just friends – they’re partners, having teamed up to buy Wrexham AFC in Wales in 2020.
So, Reynolds tried to squeeze the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star into Deadpool & Wolverine. Unfortunately, the sequence “wasn’t working”, and the actor was “mortified” to cut his cameo.
Now, to celebrate McElhenney’s birthday, Reynolds has come up with a solution: editing the Wrexham co-owner into his old movies.
Ryan Reynolds says sorry to Rob McElhenney for Deadpool & Wolverine with special birthday edit
“Robert, happy birthday! My god, another year, another trip around the old Keith Moon. God, so many highs, and so many lows,” Reynolds says at the start of the video.
“Incredible highs with you doing a cameo in the Deadpool film… and incredible lows with you being cut out of the Deadpool film. Now to make up for that, for your birthday this year, we’ve inserted you into many of my other films, all of which are available at your local blockbuster or wherever Laserdisc is sold.”
This kicks off a montage of Reynolds’ past projects, specifically Free Guy, The Amityville Horror, Blade: Trinity, Just Friends, Red Notice, The Proposal, RIPD, The Voices, Woman in Gold, Green Lantern, Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle, Detective Pikachu, and Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place.
“Well I love you, I miss you, and bye – oh, and happy birthday,” Reynolds says at the end of the video.
When it was initially revealed that McElhenney’s cameo had been cut, he jokingly tweeted: “I traveled 6 thousand miles to shoot my cameo. I hope you enjoyed it because the theater I was watching in had mistakenly cut it out.

In a later Instagram post, Reynolds confessed to “killing a darling with this cameo.”
“Even though I’m mortified he flew all the way to London for a cameo that wasn’t meant to be, I’m grateful my friend was there with me on that set. When I see Rob, my heart rate slows and my nervous system stops yelling at me. He shows up for people. And he showed up for me,” he wrote.
