Robert Kirkman gives update on Invincible movie but it’s not good news

Invincible flys into space in Season 3

The live-action Invincible movie is still in development – however, according to Robert Kirkman, it won’t be released anytime soon.

Invincible may be one of the greatest superhero shows of all time – but it wasn’t always planned as a TV series. A film adaptation was announced in 2017, with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (who went on to produce The Boys) attached to write, direct, and produce it.

Since then, updates have been few and far between, mainly because it’s enjoyed enormous success on Prime Video. Season 3 was incredible (check out our review), and fans are already hungry for Invincible Season 4 (and the inevitable arrival of Thragg).

It’s literally never been more popular; merch is flying off the digital shelves and the Invincible comics are selling out or spiking in price. So, what’s happening with the movie?

An Invincible movie will happen “one day” says Robert Kirkman

Speaking to Comic Book, Kirkman didn’t have much to say about the film adaptation. “I will say that the television show makes it vastly easier and vastly more difficult in various different aspects of the development of the movie,” he explained.

“That’s kind of where I have to leave it, unfortunately… it’s still early going. I would be shocked if doesn’t happen one day.”

The Invincible TV show is so good that it’s easy to see why the movie is a daunting prospect; how do you top a series that’s so beloved early in its run? How do you nail down the budget to bring the comic to life when animation isn’t as restrictive?

And, importantly, how do you cast Omni-Man and Invincible again when their voice actors have already delivered iconic performances?

In 2024, Kirkman also told The Direct that it’s “still in development” and the movie “absolutely has to be perfect.”

“So it’s taking a lot of time, like getting the pieces aligned and getting everything to work so that we can come out and make it as good as it can possibly be. So it’s been in development for a long time, and it’s probably going to be in development for a while longer,” he explained.
