M. Night Shyamalan’s latest movie Trap is now streaming on Netflix, and there’s a fun fact about pop star protagonist Lady Raven you should know before watching.

M. Night Shyamalan’s career has been filled with ups and downs. The writer-director failed to make much of a splash with early efforts Praying with Anger and Wide Awake, but then The Sixth Sense became one of the biggest movies of all time.

Global success followed with the likes of Unbreakable, Signs, and The Village, before Lady in the Water, The Happening, The Last Airbender, and After Earth failed. Then Shyamalan came back with the low-budget likes of The Visit, Split, and most recently, Knock at the Cabin.

Trap falls into that latter category, being the story of a dad trying to enjoy a concert with his daughter at the same time law enforcement is endeavouring to catch a serial killer in the same music venue. Lady Raven is the artist playing live, and she has a strong connection to Trap’s director.

The actress who plays Lady Raven is Saleka Night Shyamalan, who is M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter.

Saleka made her acting debut in Trap, does her own singing, and wrote 14 songs for the movie, which were collected on a soundtrack album that was released the same day as the movie – August 2, 2024 – and titled ‘Lady Raven.’

This isn’t the first time Saleka has collaborated with her father. She contributed four songs to the soundtrack of his TV series Servant, which were ultimately released as an EP. And again they were presented as the work of a fictional artist – Vivian Dale – who gets mentioned on the show, but never seen.

Saleka also contributed a song to her dad’s 2021 movie Old, and says she’s more comfortable recording music than acting in movies, telling USA Today: “In a studio producing a song, recording by myself, writing by myself – that’s my happy place. In our family, we are all in love with the art of filmmaking and also the art of music. Bringing those two things together is such a magical experience.”

She wasn’t the only Shyamalan kid making waves in 2024 either, as Saleka’s sister Ishana Night Shymalan wrote and directed her first horror movie, The Watchers. Though where Trap was a hit, grossing more than $80 million from a $30 million budget, The Watchers failed to make much of an impression, making $33 million from the same estimated budget.
