Legendary.We’re coming to the end of blockbuster season, but there are lots of great movies coming in August, including the star-studded reboot of a comedy classic, and the final superhero movie of 2025.
Captain America: Brave New World and Snow White got 2025 off to a slow start in cinemas, but since then business has picked at the global box office.
Ne Zha 2 has been the unexpected story of the year, with the animated sequel becoming the fifth biggest film in history (more on that below), while A Minecraft Movie got close to a billion dollars, and Lilo & Stitch has now surpassed that number.
But Hollywood will be hoping for some surprises in August, via a comedy reboot, a high-concept horror, and the return of Toxie…
The Naked Gun
Release Date: August 1, 2025
What it’s about: Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. follows in his father’s footsteps as the worst-best cop on Police Squad, cracking cases while romancing a beautiful femme fatale.
Why we’re excited: As Frank Drebin in the original Naked Gun movies, Leslie Nielsen was the funniest straight man in comedy history, and we’re excited for this belated reboot as Liam Neeson is a great choice to play his equally dopey and accident-prone son. With Family Guy’s Seth MacFarlane producing, and The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer co-writing and directing, the laughs should come thick and fast.

What it’s about: A group of children in a small town get up from their respective beds in the middle of the night, head out of their front doors, and are never seen again, setting up a mystery where all fingers point to their school teacher.
Why we’re excited: Zach Cregger burst onto the horror scene with the brilliant Barbarian, meaning expectations are high for his sophomore effort. The script – which has been compared to Magnolia – set off a bidding war, the cast features the likes of Josh Brolin and Julia Garner, and the trailers released thus far have been terrifying, all of which bodes well.
Nobody 2
Universal PicturesRelease Date: August 15, 2025
What it’s about: Professional assassin Hutch Mansell takes his family to Wild Bill’s Majestic Midway and Waterpark for a much-needed break, but while trying to relax, finds himself at odds with a corrupt sheriff and dangerous crime boss.
Why we’re excited: Turning Bob Odernkirk into (pretty much) John Wick for the first Nobody was an inspired decision, and the resulting film was one of the best action movies of the decade. So we’re hoping for more of the same in Nobody 2, while with The Night Comes For Us helmer Timo Tjahjanto in the director’s chair, the bloody brawls should be off the chain.
Ne Zha 2
Beijing Enlight PicturesRelease Date: August 22, 2025
What it’s about: Ne Zha is a rebellious boy who was born with wild powers, and must learn to control them when an ancient force arises with plans to destroy humanity.
Why we’re excited: This Chinese adventure movie is loosely based on an ancient myth, and has been little short of a phenomenon in cinemas all over the world, becoming the biggest animated movie of all-time. So we’re excited to see this English dub of the movie, which features Michelle Yeoh in the voice cast.
The Toxic Avenger
Legendary PicturesRelease Date: August 29, 2025
What it’s about: A janitor becomes a super-powered mutant when he’s dumped in a vat of gooze, and uses his new-found strength to fight crime and battle an evil corporation.
The Toxic Avenger review: “The Toxic Avenger is a gooey, gory reboot of the cult classic that remains true to the spirit of the original, while taking Toxie in a weird and hilarious new direction.”
