Minecraft fans think hyped “meme-along” screenings never happened for one mind-boggling reason

A Minecraft Movie has dominated theaters (and the box office) for over a month, but new “meme-along” screenings have slipped so far under the radar, fans don’t think they ever happened.
Let’s rewind. Shortly after Minecraft began hurtling towards the $1 billion box office mark, fans went wild in theaters. The infamous Chicken Jockey scene went viral on TikTok, prompting a trend of fans trashing screenings with popcorn, chanting, and, in one case, bringing a live chicken.
In order to broker peace between fans who wanted to join in and those who wanted to shut up and watch the new movie, cinemas came up with an idea. “Meme-along” screenings were designed to enhance the best parts of the hype without giving in to the bad bits, allegedly beginning on May 2, 2025.
With that date now been and gone, the days of reported chaos have all but vanished. In fact, the Minecraft Movie screenings are so quiet that fans don’t actually think they happened at all.
Minecraft movie’s “meme-along” screenings get radio silence from fans
As you can see from the below poster, the so-called “Block Party Edition” screenings were genuine. Across the UK and US, you could browse showtimes and book tickets like you would with any other film, but the fact attendance seemed to be low (if you take social media’s word for it) has sparked concern among fans.

“Haven’t seen anyone talk about this. Did this even happen???” one fan posted on X/Twitter. A second fan replied, “I was the only person in that theater,” with a third weighing in, “The silence is so funny.”
“Apparently very little people showed up to these, I’ve only seen like three videos and only one of them had more than five people,” a fourth reported.
If we look at fan responses, there are multiple reasons why we’ve not seen as much publicity this time around. The first is a fairly obvious one – lots of people have already seen it, and they took their chance to go wild when they had it. Is it as much fun when you’re ‘allowed’ to do something you shouldn’t?
“Yeah but everyone and their mother already saw the Minecraft movie so, you know, I love the Minecraft movie, but you typically wouldn’t see a movie at a theater twice,” one explained. “The second time you watch it would be when it comes out on streaming platforms.”
Another issue appears to be with screening times. Many meme-along screenings were scheduled early in the mornings, meaning screenings have tended to be empty or half-full at best.
“Who would have thought that a joke instantly becomes unfunny as soon as the company it makes fun of joins in on it,” another weighed in.
It’s currently unclear if meme-along screenings will continue in theaters. A Minecraft Movie is set to come to streaming on May 13, 2025.
