Is Jonathan Roumie leaving The Chosen? There’s a simple answer

Jonathan Roumie as Jesus in The Chosen Season 4

The Chosen Season 5 will arrive in cinemas in one week – and for some reason, fans are worried Jonathan Roumie is leaving the series.

Five years before The Chosen premiered in 2019, Dallas Jenkins made The Two Thieves, a short film following Demas and Benyamin after their arrest, shifting between the days and moments before their crucifixion and the moment they’re nailed to the cross as they discuss, reject, and accept their fate.

This was the first time Jonathan Roumie played Jesus Christ, and it led to his casting in the eventual TV show.

Over 10 years later, he’ll reprise the role in the fifth season, chronicling the events of Holy Week. It’s a pivotal part of the story, directly setting up the crucifixion in Season 6 – so why would he leave?

No, of course Jonathan Roumie isn’t leaving The Chosen. Not only is he committed to filming Seasons 6 and 7, but the actor hasn’t said anything to suggest he wants to leave the series.

Unfortunately, there’s a chance fans have been duped by multiple Facebook posts seemingly written by Roumie himself, claiming that he’s exiting the show.

They’re all some variation of, “My date of leaving The Chosen is finally here. If you want me to come back on the next season, I need a strong yes.” In other words, they’re engagement bait, posted specifically to trick fans and attract hundreds if not thousands of comments and shares.

Once again, he isn’t leaving The Chosen after Season 5. In fact, Roumie is already preparing for the crucifixion in Season 6.

“I am looking forward to – not the process – but just the opportunity to try to experience a little bit of our Lord’s Passion in a very controlled way and to kind of bring that to the world in a way that maybe reinvigorates their relationship with the crucifixion, with Jesus, and maybe ignites their relationship with Jesus,” he told Chris Pratt during a March livestream.

“If [The Chosen] compels somebody to want to engage in the story, and engage in the person of Christ some way, then to me, this is probably the most important work I’ll ever do as an actor, the most lasting thing, the most impactful role that I will ever play.”
