With Daredevil: Born Again, the Man Without Fear will finally return to the MCU – but if you’re hoping for him to become one of the Avengers, there is one problem.
Since the Netflix series ended in 2018, Charlie Cox has made brief, but impactful appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He cameoed in Spider-Man: No Way Home, catching a brick after it was flung through Peter Parker’s window.
He also tussled with She-Hulk in her Disney Plus series, before dropping in for a showstopping fight against Echo in 2024.
However, he’s never hung around with the Avengers on-screen, and the comics have already explained why.
Is Daredevil an Avenger?

No, Daredevil isn’t considered to be an Avenger. However, in the comics, he has fought alongside the Avengers, as well as the New Avengers and the Marvel Knights team.
The Netflix shows are largely considered canon in the MCU, so Matt Murdock’s main affiliation has been with the Defenders, a street-level superhero troupe made up of Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist.
In the comics, Daredevil isn’t typically aligned with any one team. That doesn’t mean he’s ever a villain, he’s just more of a solo hero who teams up with other characters from time to time (such as The Punisher and Spider-Man).
Also, as Luke Cage explains in The New Avengers Volume 2 Issue #16, it’s not that Daredevil shouldn’t be an Avenger – the team may not be worthy of him.

“Daredevil, I know him pretty well actually. Well, as well as he lets anyone know him. End of the day, without question, he’s one of the best, ever. I’m not going to get into who he is and how he became who he became, and I know there are a lot of people who think they know all there is to know about Daredevil and all of his secrets,” he says.
“But I can tell you from personal experience that the information that’s out there is pretty much crap. Let’s just leave it at that. All you need to know about Daredevil is that this man has sacrificed everything to try to make this city safer.
“He has lost more and suffered more for his dedication to you than well, anybody I know. And I know some people who’ve suffered and lost. He ain’t the strongest of us, and he ain’t the flashiest, but Daredevil cannot be brought down. It cannot happen.
“He is driven by demons deeper than anything anyone you know has ever been driven by. And I’m telling you, in this business, all of us are demon-driven. And even on that level, he still defines himself by his drive and dedication.
“People gonna ask: is Daredevil Avengers material. In my opinion, and I don’t mean to be corny, but to me the question is: are the Avengers Daredevil material?”
Why Daredevil struggles to be an Avenger

There’s a practical reason Daredevil isn’t suited to the Avengers: his super-senses can be overwhelmed by the large-scale fights they typically handle.
This is explained in Daredevil Issue #6 (Mark Waid’s 2014 run, specifically). Matt Murdock recounts being “sucked into a big fight between a villain called the Orb and half the hero community.”
“I’m lousy in these. My radar sense can only handle so much chaos, and any donnybrook wild enough to involve both the Hulk and the Thing is, for me, like being caught in a hurricane.”
Considering Daredevil depends on the strength of his other senses, this puts him at a huge disadvantage – even making him believe he’s been injured when he’s completely fine.
“I heard an explosion. I felt jagged glass plunge into my brain so hard that I was astounded to discover I wasn’t at all wounded.”
Charlie Cox wants to join the Avengers

Nevertheless, Charlie Cox is hoping to see Daredevil join Marvel’s A-list lineup somewhere along the line – especially with Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars on the horizon.
Speaking to Comic Book, the star was asked if he’d rather rejoin the Defenders or team up with the Avengers.
“Over the course of these years, I’ve become a big fan of this character. One of the things I’m acutely aware of is there are some really cool team-ups, and Daredevil plays a really interesting, pivotal role in some of the Avengers comics.
“For the sake of the character, I think that would be a wonderful moment… an homage to so much history.”
There have been rumors of Daredevil and Kingpin appearing in Spider-Man 4, which is coming out between Doomsday and Secret Wars. So, who knows; perhaps it may actually happen.
