Invincible Season 3 Episode 5 just set up one of the comic’s darkest moments

Mark in Invincible and a still from Issue #80

In Invincible Season 3 Episode 5, Mark and Eve figure out a way to make some money – and, if the show remains faithful to the comic, it will lead to a jaw-dropping moment.

In Invincible, the public pays the price when heroes fight supervillains; buildings are destroyed and lives are permanently changed or even lost en-masse.

It’s a source of overwhelming guilt for Mark, especially after his calamitous fight with Omni-Man, and other heroes are anxious about it too. For example, in Season 2, Eve tries to fast-track a construction project in the city – but she doesn’t build it properly, and people suffer serious injuries.

Then again, when it comes to stopping a bad guy, what’s the alternative? Thousands may die, but millions could be saved as a result. Well, later in the Invincible comic, we see what happens when Mark can’t save the day. SPOILERS to follow!

Invincible Inc is a big tease for a shocking storyline

Dinosaurus in Las Vegas in the Invincible comic

In Episode 5, Eve launches Invincible Inc, offering Mark’s superhero services to prisons and other clients in need. This happens in the comics too, but it goes wrong when Dinosaurus returns.

Quick breakdown: Dinosaurus is the villainous, monstrous counterpart of David Anders, who transforms into a huge humanoid dinosaur any time he feels “indifferent” about something. When he’s in his normal form, David doesn’t have any evil or corrupt aspirations – but Dinosaurus is incredibly dangerous.

He’s a genius, and he’s desperate to use his knowledge for the benefit of mankind – but there’s always a grave cost.

In Issue #80, Eve receives a call about a “big red guy” tearing Las Vegas apart. Mark flies over to stop him, but Dinosaurus doesn’t want to fight him: he wants Mark to help him evacuate the city.

“This city is an abomination on this Earth. It was not meant to be here. A man-made oasis in the middle of a naturally formed desert. In minutes, this city will be nothing more than a memory,” he explains.

The Las Vegas explosion in the Invincible comic

“This city is a drain on natural resources of epic proportions. The Colorado River will soon dry up. This region can’t sustain itself. Furthermore, if it were destroyed, the area would be ideal for a solar power station large enough to power this country with clean energy, freeing it from the burden of fossil fuels.”

Mark tells him he’s insane and quickly finds a bomb… but it’s not that simple. By this point, Dinosaurus has already planted 50 bombs around the city. “My plan was to evacuate myself as well. There’s still so much good I could do. A pity,” he says.

Seconds later, Las Vegas is blown to smithereens. The whole city is wiped out, leaving nothing but glass; hundreds of thousands of people evaporated in the blink of an eye. “My god, it’s all gone,” Mark reacts, as he kneels naked on the ground of what was.

I won’t go into any other details of how this impacts Mark and the rest of the story – let’s just say it’s substantial.
