Rex and Shrinking Rae’s relationship is one of the most unexpected and welcome developments in Invincible Season 3 – but if you’ve read the comics, you should be very worried. Huge spoilers ahead…
Cast your mind back to the second season of Invincible. While Mark, Eve, and most of the Guardians flew off into space to handle the Sequids, Rex stayed on Earth with Shrinking Rae and Dupli-Kate.
They were attacked by the Lizard League, with Komodo Dragon seemingly murdering Kate and all of her clones before swallowing Rae, and King Lizard shooting Rex in the head. Thankfully, they all survived; Rex and Rae went through lengthy recoveries in hospital, while Kate hid a secret duplicate thousands of miles away.
Since then, Rex and Rae have grown… closer. In Episode 5, they had dinner together, and they take things further in Episode 6. Unfortunately, I know what might be coming in Episode 7 – and if you don’t want to know, this is your last chance to stop reading!

Rex could die in Invincible Season 3 Episode 7
Invincible Season 3 Episode 7 is destined to be an adaptation of the Invincible War, an event in the comics that sees Angstrom Levy send dozens of evil Marks from across the multiverse to the main timeline to slaughter people and tarnish his name.
This is as calamitous and bloody as you can imagine, with every superhero in the world uniting to stop the carnage. Entire cities are leveled and millions of innocent lives are lost.
And, there are some big casualties – including Rex. It’s a jaw-dropping moment: he tells Robot to flee with Amanda “before he kills all of us. Leave him to me. It’s the only way.”

The Invincible variant grabs Rex by the neck and warns him it was a “futile gesture… I’m going to pop your head off and then fly off to murder all three of them.”
“What do you hope to accomplish against me? You’re out of batons and golf balls and whatever you kept in your pockets. Your wrist launcher is spent. You’ve got nothing. No way of attacking me. So, tell me, how are you going to kill me? What are you going to charge and explode?” he asks.
Rex replies with two words: “My skeleton.” In an instant, his body ignites, obliterating the Invincible variant and killing himself in the process. Remember, Rex is capable of molecular acceleration and kinetic charging – in other words, his whole body has always been a weapon, and he flicked the self-destruct switch to save the lives of his friends.
Rae makes Rex’s fate in Invincible more complicated

The Invincible TV show has been praised for its approach to Rex. Yes, he sacrifices himself – but he’s still pretty obnoxious in the comics, and the series has done a great job of making him a more likable and developed character, especially in his dynamic with Rae.
They have a sweet relationship. In the wake of the Lizard League ambush, Rae craves normality; she wants an ordinary life where she can cook dinner and not worry about leaping into action to risk her own life. Rex still loves being a superhero – in his own words, he feels like he’s “nothing” without his Rex Splode identity – but he understands Rae’s wishes.
However, this makes things a bit complicated – and no matter what happens, it’s probably going to hurt a lot.
Here’s the thing: by this point in the story, Rae is already dead. In the comics, she was killed by the Lizard League. Her courtship with Rex has been exclusively developed for the show.
So, there are a few ways Episode 7 could go down. Rae might die and Rex could sacrifice himself in an act of vengeance, Rex could sacrifice himself to save Rae, or the show could change things up entirely.
After all, Robert Kirkman told us there will be surprises in the last two episodes. “Don’t think you’ve got it figured out. You may get something unexpected at the end. There’s probably going to be some surprises along the way for comic book fans and definitely some tweaks here and there,” he said.
That said, it seems incredibly unlikely that both characters will make it out of the Invincible War unscathed – and Rex’s death feels like an unavoidable moment, given the ripple effects it has on the rest of the story (no more spoilers, you’ve had enough).
