Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 trailer drops and fans have big question about age rating

The first trailer for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 has dropped out of CinemaCon, teasing more animatronic terror – but fans want to know one thing about its age rating.

Once upon a time, video game movies were considered to be cursed; it’s easy to see why, especially if you’ve watched House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, and Postal.

2023’s Five Nights at Freddy’s is a great example of how the curse has been lifted: it took the game’s relatively simple premise and turned it into a bona fide crowd-pleaser, landing well with critics, fans, and grossing nearly $300 million worldwide.

Later this year, the sequel will arrive in cinemas, with Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, and Matthew Lillard all reprising their roles. The question is… will it still be rated PG-13?

Fans want Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 to be R-rated

After the first teaser dropped online, some Five Nights at Freddy’s fans have made their opinion clear: they want an R-rated adaptation of the game.

“Movies like this hit harder if they were Rated R. Let’s be real people wanna see blood,” one user wrote. “Can it be rated R this time?” another asked. “Make this one rated R. I want to see blood and guts,” a third posted.

“Would be so much better if they’d let these movies be rated R. Instead it’s babies’ first horror movie,” a fourth wrote.

Three things to note: firstly, as other fans have pointed out, Five Nights at Freddy’s has never been especially graphic and it has always been aimed at teenagers; secondly, the sequel looks to be leaning more into horror, so it’ll still deliver scares; and thirdly, Lillard has already confirmed it’ll be PG-13.

After an interview with Forbes, the outlet confirmed: “One thing the Hackers actor confirmed was that, like the first film, the sequel would be PG-13 rather than a harder R rating.”

“I will say that I think the filmmakers have done a great job of learning from the first movie of what fans want, and I think they’re giving a lot more of that,” he said.

“It’s going to be more exciting, and I think it’s going to have more action. It’s going to have a lot of character development stuff. It’s hard to kiss around it. I think the story ends, and this movie ends in a really exciting way.”
