Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 release date & major cast updates

Animatronic shown in Five Nights at Freddy's 2

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is set to be bigger, bolder, and scarier, and it’s dropping in 2025. We’ve got all the details on returning and new cast members, plot, release date, and more.

After years of waiting, the Five Nights At Freddy’s movie arrived in theatres in 2023. While the movie was met with mixed reviews, it still managed to bring in a solid sum of roughly $300 million at the box office.

Many praised the animatronics that were specifically designed for the movie and enjoyed the Easter eggs and references to the games. Given its immense profit, a sequel was greenlit almost immediately, and there’s even been talks of a third film set to follow it up shortly after as well.

For now though, here’s everything we know so far about Five Nights At Freddy’s 2, including some major cast updates.

Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 release date

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is scheduled to release on December 5, 2025.

As filming got underway in November 2024, the sequel’s production is on track and the crew is barrelling towards its end-of-year release date.

Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 cast

We know four key cast members are set to reprise their roles in the sequel. Josh Hutcherson is back in the lead role as Mike Schmidt while the likes of Vanessa, Abby, and William will all return.

As such, the confirmed FNAF 2 cast and characters include:

  • Josh Hutcherson as Mike Schmidt
  • Elizabeth Lail as Vanessa
  • Piper Rubio as Abby
  • Matthew Lillard as William Afton

In July 2025, after months of speculation, Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman said, “I can confirm that Skeet Ulrich is playing Henry Emily.”

Skeet Ulrich in Scream

Henry is a key figure in the Five Nights at Freddy’s lore as the co-founder of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza who helped to create the original animatronics. Ulrich, best known for his horror roots in Scream and The Craft, brings genre experience to the pivotal role.

Wayne Knight (Jurassic Park, Seinfeld), Mckenna Grace (Young Sheldon, Ghostbusters: Afterlife), and Teo Briones (Chucky, Final Destination Bloodlines) have also been cast in currently undisclosed roles.

Beyond these names, Emma Tammi will return to direct the sequel, while the game’s creator, Scott Cawthon, is penning the script.

When asked what he would want to see for a sequel, Lillard told Dexerto that he is open to any and everything the director throws his way, even if it does mean him hiding behind a mask as Springtrap.

“For me as an actor, in terms of Afton, I mean, it’ll be interesting. Now with Springtrap, is he in the mask the whole time? Does he do flashback sequences?…

“I’m up for all of it. I found I was surprised at how excited I was to put the mask on and put the whole suit on because it informed me in this crazy way that I never expected. So whatever comes my way, however it goes, I’m down. I can’t wait to dig in and get to the next layer of the storytelling.”

Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 plot: What will the sequel be about?

Little is known about the Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 plot, with Universal and Blumhouse releasing this short synopsis: “Anyone can survive five nights. This time, there will be no second chances.” However, we do know that William Afton will be back in a different form to bring more terror to Mike, Abby, and Vanessa.

While the ending of the first FNAF movie tied up most plot threads, it certainly left the door open for a sequel. Vanessa revealed that her dad used to work at the pizzeria as a yellow rabbit, which is a motif seen on the derelict walls in the restaurant in children’s drawings.

It’s also something the dream children talk about. Turns out, Vanessa’s dad Afton snatched the five children and put them where nobody would think to look – inside the animatronics themselves. Not only was Afton responsible for taking Mike’s brother Garrett, but he’s also the same person as Steve Raglan, the careers expert from earlier in the movie.

While Mike’s out, a defunct version of Freddy goes to collect Abby at the house, killing Aunt Jane in the process. When they get back to the restaurant, the animatronics turn on her, each trying to kill her. Mike races back to the restaurant, tasers in hand, just in time to stall the bulk of the dolls before the yellow rabbit arrives.

The child version of Freddy is seen back at the restaurant, watching the slow death of Afton in the rabbit costume, which fans will know as the character Springtrap. However, as he says in the franchise, “I always come back,” and this is certainly true for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2.

What’s more, Richtman stated that the new movie “includes several flashback scenes set in the 1980s, which are spread throughout the film. The character Charlotte – Henry Emily’s daughter – dies in the 1983 flashback scenes.”

Last year, Hutcherson told Esquire that the sequel is “much bigger” and that “the stakes are higher.” He added, “There’s more animatronics being brought in, different animatronics being brought in, and the world just opens up in a big way.

“We’re finding the balance right now of building this world and expanding it in a really cool way but also making sure the characters stay really grounded. That’s something that I really think that we all fought for in the first film, because this world that was created in Five Nights at Freddy’s, it’s so out-there.

“It’s so over-the-top and wacky, in a way, that to find the emotional truth of the characters was gonna be what was gonna work. I think the fans are gonna flip for it. It’s gonna be a lot of fun with the source. It’s gonna be scarier, too, actually.”

Is there a trailer?

Although we’re yet to get the full Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 trailer just yet, Universal dropped the teaser trailer in April 2025. Check it out below:

We got our first look at the sequel in January thanks to YouTuber Dawko, who was provided three early images as part of a charity stream. While they’re nothing groundbreaking, we do see Matthew Lillard on set, along with a new ‘FazTalker’ toy that’s sure to be devious.
