Elden Ring movie may get made without George R.R. Martin but there’s a good reason

Bear witness, for an Elden Ring movie may be in development behind the scenes – but if you’re expecting George R.R. Martin to help adapt it for the big screen, think again.

Elden Ring was a bonafide phenomenon, hailed as one of the best games of all time and – even with its acclaimed track record – the culmination of FromSoftware’s compulsively grueling history.

One of its earliest selling points was the involvement of Martin, helping to establish and enrich the world of the Lands Between, with his mythology also informing the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.

The Game of Thrones author dropped a cheeky tease about the possibility of an Elden Ring film adaptation last year – and while he hasn’t said much more about it, something appears to be happening.

Speaking to IGN, Martin was asked about the prospect of him returning to develop Elden Ring 2. While he avoided an answer, he said: “Well, I can’t say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring.”

The idea of Martin overseeing the translation of Elden Ring into a blockbuster video game movie is exciting – but, for the Game of Thrones readers, it won’t feel like good news. After all, between House of the Dragon Season 3, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and the other spinoffs in the works at HBO, when is he supposed to find the time to finish the Winds of Winter?

Well, here’s something that should comfort you: even if an Elden Ring movie happens, he wants to focus on finishing the Song of Ice and Fire story.

“We’ll see if that [the Elden Ring movie] comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement was, I don’t know. I’m a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do,” he said.

That’s an understatement. The last book in the series was released in July 2011 – people have been waiting nearly 14 years to find out how it ends (especially after Game of Thrones’ ending). To borrow Godfrey’s words, they probably feel like they’ve given thee courtesy enough.

Earlier this year, he told THR: “Unfortunately, I am 13 years late. Every time I say that, I’m [like], ‘How could I be 13 years late?’ I don’t know, it happens a day at a time.

“But that’s still a priority. A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!”

In other words, fans’ hopes of reading The Winds of Winter and seeing an Elden Ring movie aren’t tarnished… yet.
