Given the time period and demanding winters, the Dutton family really goes through it in 1923, but few characters have encountered as much trouble as Alex.
As a member of the high society in England, Alex didn’t know what she was in for when she fell in love with Spencer Dutton. In the months following, she escaped with her life a handful of times, and things only got worse in the second season.
Her mission in Season 2 was to get to Montana safely with her baby, but it proved to be a harder task than she ever could have imagined.
So, did she manage to make it out alive? Here’s what you need to know. (Spoilers ahead!)
Alex sadly died at the end of 1923 Season 2
Alex died in the 1923 Season 2 finale after reuniting with Spencer, since she had already suffered too much damage after being trapped in the icy wilderness and then had to go through early childbirth.
It’s never been an easy road for Alex. In Season 1 alone, she and Spencer nearly died multiple times after encounters with wild animals and sinking ships. But by working together, they just managed to make it out of the season in one piece.
In Season 2, we found out she was pregnant, travelling alone from New York to Bozeman, Montana, where she hoped to reach the Dutton Ranch and Spencer.

She encountered plenty of troubles along the way. Not necessarily life-threatening, but she was roughly examined, beaten, robbed, and sexually assaulted.
Things seemed to be looking up after she caught a ride from a kind British couple after the trains couldn’t travel through the terrible winter conditions, but that had an unhappy ending, too. The couple, Paul and Hillary, both died in the night when their car became trapped in snowfall.
Alex, stranded and freezing to death, had to resort to desperate measures to survive, and even burned the car down when she saw an approaching train. Thankfully, Spencer was on the train, and the two were finally reunited.

However, it was too late. Her hands and feet had turned black from frostbite, and the trauma meant that her baby was dying. She was taken to a hospital in Bozeman, where the doctors tried to abort the baby and give her a life-saving operation, but would leave her without her limbs.
She decided to turn them down, instead choosing to spend her remaining hours with her baby, John II, who was then born six months old. She died that night, but John survived.
Alex was a very important 1923 character
The 1923 Season 2 finale finally proved that Alex was the grandmother of John Dutton III, played by Kevin Costner.
Liz was also pregnant, as revealed in 1923 Season 2 Episode 4. However, there was still no way of knowing which couple were John Dutton’s grandparents.

In naming her baby John, Alex finally confirmed the missing piece of the puzzle. Without her, the ranch might not have been able to remain within the Dutton family, and we certainly wouldn’t have the likes of John, Beth, and Kayce.
