Captain America: Brave New World will be Anthony Mackie’s first solo movie in the MCU. Here are the release details, who’s in the cast, and what Cap will be getting up to.
With Steve Rogers happily retired (yes, we’re choosing to believe he’s just happily hiding away somewhere), the MCU has a new star-spangled hero in the form of his old buddy, Sam Wilson.
Sam’s first experience with the iconic shield in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier left a little to be desired, but that was just the start of his story.
Brave New World is the first step, but his tenure is expected to extend to Marvel’s Phase 6‘s new movies and beyond.
Captain America: Brave New World release date
Captain America: Brave New World releases in US theaters on February 14, 2025.
Originally called Captain America: New World Order, the release date was pushed back twice during the 2023 strikes, but it’s confirmed for early 2025.
Julius Onah directs. He previously helmed The Cloverfield Paradox and the critically acclaimed Luce.

Who’s in the cast?
Anthony Mackie will star as Sam Wilson/Captain America. He’s joined by Harrison Ford, Giancarlo Esposito, Sebastian Stan, and Emily VanCamp.
Ford will play General Thaddeus E. “Thunderbolt” Ross, taking over the role once played by the late William Hurt. Tim Blake Nelson is also returning to the MCU as The Leader, the villain set up at the end of The Incredible Hulk.
Here’s the full cast:
- Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson / Captain America
- Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres / Falcon
- Shira Haas as Ruth Bat-Seraph
- Xosha Roquemore as Leila Taylor
- Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley
- Giancarlo Esposito as Seth Voelker / Sidewinder
- Liv Tyler as Betty Ross
- Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns / Leader
- Harrison Ford as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross / Red Hulk
- Takehiro Hira appears as Prime Minister Ozaki

Danny Ramirez and Carl Lumbly also return to reprise their roles from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as Joaquin Torres and Isiah Bradley, respectively.
Newcomers to the MCU include Shira Haas as Sabra and Xosha Roquemore as Leila Taylor, Ross’ head of security and long-time romantic interest for Sam in the comics.
Liv Tyler is reprising her role as Elizabeth “Betty” Ross. Tyler previously starred in 2009’s The Incredible Hulk as Bruce Banner’s (then played by Edward Norton) love interest.
VanCamp played a big part in Falcon and the Winter Soldier, revealing Sharon Carter to be much more covert than we thought and possibly setting her up as an antagonist for Brave New World.
Plot
Captain America: Brave New World follows Sam as he adapts to being Captain America after the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. He goes up against Harrison Ford’s Red Hulk, a meaner, and redder version of the Hulk.

During an appearance on Comic Book’s Phase Zero podcast, producer Nate Moore said: “He’s not Steve Rogers and I think that’s a good thing… This new Cap is Rocky, the underdog in any situation. He’s not a super soldier.
“He’s not a hundred years old. He doesn’t have the Avengers. What happens with this guy who announces publicly kind of, without the support, ‘I’m the new Captain America.’ What happens next?
“I think it’s fascinating because he’s a guy. He’s a guy with wings and a shield, but he is a guy. So, we’re going to put him through the wringer and make him earn it, and see what happens when he is outweighed, outclassed, out-everything.
“What makes somebody Captain America? I’m going to argue it’s not being a super soldier. And I think we’re going to prove that with Mackie and Sam Wilson.”
One rumored point was that of Joaquin Torres becoming the second Falcon. A McDonald’s Happy Meal toy leak confirmed this, along with the appearance of Red Hulk and Sabra. A later leak shared to Reddit of another McDonald’s promotional poster reveals a better look at Torres in his Falcon costume.
Trailers
Marvel released a Captain America 4 teaser trailer on July 12, 2024.
The trailer for the upcoming Marvel movie showed Sam’s strenuous relationship with Ross and the US government after he declared himself the new Cap at the end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Ross is hoping to be re-elected, and as part of his run wants to make Captain America an “official military position.”
The tone of the trailer takes on the feel of a political thriller, much like Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
A full Brave New World trailer was then released on November 9, with a fresh look at Red Hulk:
This version of the trailer looks way darker, with the editing leaning on the high stakes and the pressing tension of a political drama.
How to watch Captain America: Brave New World
Disney confirmed Brave New World will be “only in theaters” upon its February 14, 2025, release. Eventually, the movie will end up on Disney+, likely towards the end of summer 2025.

You’ll need a subscription to the platform for that. If you sign up, you can also watch The Falcon and the Winter Soldier there to prepare for the movie.
Captain America: Brave New World runtime
Brave New World runs for 1 hour, 58 minutes (118 minutes). This makes it one of the shortest MCU movies, and the shortest Captain America Movie.
The Marvels still holds the record for the shortest MCU movie at 1 hour 45 minutes, with Endgame’s 3 hours and 1 minute runtime making it the longest. Brave New World is only longer than The Marvels, The Incredible Hulk, Thor: The Dark World, Thor, Doctor Strange, and Ant-Man, and is tied with Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Budget & how does it compare?
According to Deadline, Captain America: Brave New World cost around $180 million to make. To compare, Deadpool and Wolverine cost around $200 million, with another $100 million going towards marketing.
It’s far from the most expensive MCU movie, with the latest three Avengers movies all costing upwards of $300 million.
