Brian Laundrie’s sister Cassie shares shocking Instagram post after American Murder

Brian Laundrie and Cassie Laundrie

Cassie Laundrie, the sister of Brian Laundrie, is under fire once more after Netflix released American Murder: Gabby Petito, but she’s now broken her silence and clapped back in an Instagram post. Warning: some may find this content distressing.

In August 2021, Brian murdered his fiance Gabby during a cross-country vanlife road trip. But as Gabby’s parents sought answers, Brian traveled back to his home in Florida and kept silent on the case after his parents, Roberta and Christopher Laundrie, lawyered up.

They repeatedly refused to cooperate with the authorities in their investigation, leading to swarms of protestors and the press gathering outside their house. Eventually, Brian went on the run and died by suicide, leaving behind a notebook in which he confessed to killing Gabby.

Prior to his death, Brian’s older sister Cassie became entangled in the media frenzy as the manhunt for her brother intensified. Now, she’s once again under scrutiny following the release of Netflix’s latest American Murder docu-series.

Taking to Instagram, Cassie shared a statement accusing detective Tracey Barry of “gravely miscommunicating” what she said at the time, while also saying she hasn’t spoken to her parents in two years.

The post features a note that reads, “No one from any family contacted me until detective Barry called me. Det. Barry gravely miscommunicated what I told her in the phone.”

In the caption, she said, “If you’re new here. And just starting to attack me today. I’ve been non contact with my parents for almost two years. Have fun.”

Cassie has been vocal about her opinion on the case on her Instagram page, having shared a post in November 2024 that alleges her brother was a victim of domestic violence.

“I told law enforcement about all the DV that happened to my brother in the years. I told media. I told lawyers. The narrative stays. At this point it’s ridiculous,” she said

In the latest statement, Cassie appears to be referring to Detective Tracey Barry of Suffolk County, New York, who spoke with Florida officers in September 2021 after Gabby was reported missing.

Detective Barry reported that Cassie said Brian told her he flew home and left Gabby at a hotel in Wyoming. This left law enforcement confused, as when they turned up at the Laundrie household, Gabby’s van was parked outside.

Another reason Cassie is facing backlash is because of text messages shown in American Murder, in which she joked with her mother Roberta after Brian had gone on the run.

At that time, police admitted that they lost track of Brian as they confused him with his mom.

Roberta wrote, “The North Port Police said Brian and I have a ‘similar build!’ Boy, Brian would not be happy about THAT!” Cassie replied, “Yeah, everyone’s laughing at that remark because not even remotely close.”

Text message from Cassie Laundrie to Roberta Laundrie

Cassie continues to face angry comments after clapping back, with one writing on her latest post, “Imagine claiming this, when you were joking with your mom in text messages while Gabby was murdered and missing.”

Another said, “Girl, a quick glance at your account shows that you never, not once, advocated for Gabby – posting links to articles about men being victims of domestic violence and not-so-subtle jabs at her family in your captions over the years.

“Your brother bludgeoned and strangled a waif of a woman to death, and you’re excusing it because what – she scratched him after he cut her eye and tried to lock her out of *her* vehicle? After he emotionally manipulated her and isolated her from her friends/family in classic, textbook abuser behavior?

“If you don’t want the heat – stop lighting fires. You and your folks deserve all the backlash and karma you’re getting for the complete lack of grace you showed that poor girl’s family during one of the worst things a parent could go through.”

A third added, “I could maybe, *maybe* have a little more empathy for the Laundries if Brian had turned himself in, pointed law enforcement to the location of her body, and owned it.

“But he stole her money, faked text correspondence and posed as her to build his alibi all while driving home to be shielded by a family of enablers and leave the ‘love of his life’ to be taken by the elements while her family was terrified and suffering.

“Those are not the actions of a domestic violence victim who made an impulsive and deadly choice in the heat of the moment. That’s the behavior of a calculated abuser and killer without remorse.”

A fourth chimed in, “Please close your IG if you actually have nothing to do with this situation. I understand that you’re grieving your brother but it looks like you’re trying to dismiss what happened to Gabby.

“Speak up for her if you truly care about the situation. The only thing that you’ll be getting with posts like these and open IG is hate because of the new documentary.”
