Avengers: Doomsday report reveals big detail about Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom & the X-Men

The MCU is on a collision course with Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom, and according to a new report, there’s a good reason behind his actions in Avengers: Doomsday.

Spoiler alert: at the end of Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom appears in the Baxter building, last seen kneeling in front of Franklin Richards and teeing up the events of Doomsday.

What does he want, and why is he interested in Franklin? Unlike Thanos, who got six years of build-up via several post-credits scenes and the emergence of the Infinity Stones, Doom is dropping into the Multiverse Saga almost out of nowhere, and whatever happens next year, it’ll set up Avengers: Secret Wars.

Thanks to The Cosmic Circus, we have a better idea of why Downey’s Doom has his sights set on Franklin.

Why Doctor Doom needs Franklin in Avengers: Doomsday

In Avengers: Doomsday, incursions will reportedly threaten the lives of trillions, despite Loki’s best efforts to stabilize time and anchor the Marvel multiverse.

“Even with Loki’s intervention at the end of his show in Season 2, the Multiverse is still on the brink of collapse, and there’s only a handful of viable Earths left,” The Cosmic Circus’ latest Q&A reads.

“One of the Earths we’re going to see is one completely decimated by the incursion, sort of to make the heroes understand what exactly they’re going up against.”

This is where Doctor Doom comes in. As the outlet notes, he should be viewed a bit like Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War – he’s the hero of his own story, and he believes he’s doing what needs to be done to save the world(s).

“He sees the incursions that are happening as a danger to the Multiverse, and he wants to put a stop to it using a young Franklin Richards. He sees himself as the hero in this story and will do whatever it takes to make sure he stays on top,” the report adds.

There’s another curious detail: Doom will seemingly have his own team, and they’ll appear alongside Sam Wilson’s Avengers, the New Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and Loki’s team. The report doesn’t outline who’s on each team.

Expect comic-accurate X-Men in Avengers: Doomsday

X-Men '97 team

While the early X-Men movies are still beloved today, there’s one thing most people agree on: the costumes were rubbish, symptomatic of Hollywood wanting to have its cake and eat it.

It’s a comic book movie with some of the most iconic Marvel characters ever, yet they’re all wearing homogenous black leather suits – where’s the color and eccentricity?

Even though it’s animated, the success of X-Men ’97 should prove that people are ready to see the mutants in their get-ups from the comics. Thankfully, that appears to be the case.

According to The Cosmic Circus, “the costume department is really bringing it with some of these looks. The X-Men look like a blend between Astonishing X-Men and X-Men ’97.”

As for why they’re involved in Doomsday, it’s been theorized that Doom will pit the Avengers against the X-Men, and the movie could even end with their deaths (or some of them, at least, with a few staying on for Secret Wars). And that’s before we get to Deadpool…
