The production company behind Netflix smash Adolescence is planning to tackle equally weighty material in a new series based on the most shocking TV movie of all time.
Warp Films makes challenging TV and movies that examine serious stories with big themes, from This is England and Four Lions on the big screen, to acclaimed TV dramas like The Virtues and Reunion.
The Sheffield-based studio is also behind Adolescence, a brilliant Netflix drama about the fallout from the murder of a schoolgirl, which was told across four episodes that were shot in four single, unbroken takes.
That series broke a number of streaming records, and talk quickly turned to a potential sequel, but Warp now has another series in development, that’s likely to be an equally challenging watch.
Adolescence producers are rebooting Threads as a TV drama
Warp Films has acquired the option to turn the 1984 film Threads into a television drama.
Written by Barry Hines and directed by Mick Jackson, the original TV movie was a harrowing depiction of life in Sheffield during a global conflict, with the film receiving acclaim for its documentary style that brought home the horrors of a nuclear winter.
Threads is a relentlessly traumatising watch that was first broadcast on the BBC in September 1984, while it was shown on Superstation TBS in the US in January 1985. It proved to be a ratings winner on both sides of the Atlantic and won four BAFTAs, including Best Single Drama.
Warp issued a statement about the forthcoming reboot, saying: “Renowned for its groundbreaking portrayal of a fictional apocalypse, Threads offers a harrowing depiction of life in nuclear war-era Britain, set in Sheffield. This adaptation will explore prescient issues through rich, character-driven storytelling. The original film’s chilling account immerses viewers in the struggles of ordinary people facing unimaginable hardship.”

Warp founder and CEO Mark Herbert added: “Threads was, and remains, an unflinchingly honest drama that imagines the devastating effects of nuclear conflict on ordinary people. This story aligns perfectly with our ethos of telling powerful, grounded narratives that deeply connect with audiences. Reimagining this classic film as a TV drama gives us a unique opportunity to explore its modern relevance.”
