We’re only two episodes into 1923 Season 2 and its return already has fans’ backs up. Why? Take your pick – it’s piling up a list of “ridiculous” reasons.
Honestly, it’s a great time to be a Taylor Sheridan fan. Yellowstone might have ended for good, but its spinoffs continue the Dutton family‘s screentime. A Beth and Rip spinoff is in the pipeline for some point in the future, but we’re retracing history with 1923 Season 2.
A brutal new villain is on the horizon, Alexandra is up the duff, and tragedy has already been tipped for the majority of the season. But already, fans are getting annoyed by what they’re seeing.
If Sheridan’s “sadistic” habits weren’t enough on their own, Episode 2 leaves us with three more “ridiculous” reasons for switching off altogether.
Fans are annoyed by 1923 Season 2 for three reasons
After two episodes, fans are annoyed with 1923 Season 2 for three reasons – Spencer’s drama with the Mafia, Elizabeth’s “damsel in distress” routine, and the show simply dragging things on for too long.
Let’s go through these one by one. Luca has introduced Spencer to Signore Maceo, the head of the Galveston mafia syndicate. He’s now helping them out, which is another layer of tension the Dutton onion just doesn’t need.

“Like, what next? He gets captured by the Yakuza? All he had to do was say ‘Listen, when we get to your cousins place, all I want in exchange for saving your life, is safe passage to a goddamn train station.’ That would’ve taken two minutes. End scene,” one fan weighs in.
Another adds: “It’s all ridiculous. Lions, a sunken ship with a shark attack, a duel, thwarting a rapist, fight club. Of course mafia. Every over the top macho trope u can imagine.”
Then we’re adding Elizabeth into the mix. She’s still alive, having been bitten by a wolf in Episode 2. She was treated for rabies, but she’s hardly the strong independent female we know she can be anyway.
“I swear to god, if that girl doesn’t ask for a gun and learns to shoot on the next episode…” another said. “I get it, she’s young, she didn’t grow up in a ranch, but come on! The helpless whiny girl act gets old. As someone else mentioned in another post, there’s no growth. She made the choice to stay knowing it was hard, she’s living with an incredibly strong woman, she can stand to learn a thing or two.”

Sheridan has previously been criticized for how he writes female characters, including Bella Hadid’s Yellowstone cameo and that shocking Landman scene.
For other fans, it’s merely that the show’s already moving super slowly that’s getting to them. “Taylor has simply dragged this on for two seasons already. More happens in an episode of Yellowstone than so far in the first two seasons of this show. We couldn’t have just got Spencer and Alex back to the US already? They’re nowhere close,” one fan summed up.
“I KNOW, Alex is going to arrive before he does to a shocked family, and I’m sure this’ll all set up S3, which we’ll have to wait two years for. Let’s get this thing going!”
Whether any further character development – or change in pace – comes in future episodes remains to be seen… if fans even get that far watching. Episode 3 airs March 9, 2025.
