1923 Season 2 Episode 6 recap: Taylor Sheridan kills seven characters in massacre episode

1923 Season 2 Episode 6, ‘The Mountain Teeth of Monsters,’ may have the highest kill count of any Yellowstone episode ever, and one death will hit the Duttons harder than anything else.
Things are much the same at the end of Episode 5. Alex and Spencer are still trying to get back to Montana, the Duttons are trying to survive winter, and Teonna is still on the run.
Alex caught a break thanks to a generous British couple last time we saw her, but the episode ended on a cliffhanger when Pete came face to face with Marshal Kent and his gun.
1923 Season 2 Episode 6 picks up where we left off, with the Duttons about to receive news of Spencer’s return. Unfortunately, seven characters will be dead by the end of this installment. (Warning: major spoilers ahead!)
Good news arrives at the ranch in 1923 Season 2 Episode 6
There’s a chance of pace for the Duttons at the ranch at the beginning of Episode 6. They may not have any chickens for eggs, but at least their dining table is finally full of people. But their meal is interrupted when the Sheriff turns up with some good news: Spencer is on his way home.
Jacob is elated, but knows what’s about to happen. As soon as Spencer arrives, a war will break out, and that’s only if Whitfield’s men don’t get to him first. (And they likely already know thanks to the Sheriff’s phone call from Amarillo.)

Preparing for trouble, he sets about making a plan to get his guys together for whenever Spencer’s train gets into Livingston.
“If Whitfield finds out, he’ll kill him, Bill,” Jacob tells him. “And if he does, I swear to God, I will burn his f**kin’ house to the ground with him in it!”

And he’s right to be cautious – Banner is currently in the bar, getting the dirt about Spencer and his honors from his men. He tells them to wait at the station in Livingston for when Spencer arrives. “If this Spencer Dutton steps off, put a hole in him,” he says. After that, they’ll kill the rest of the Duttons one by one.
Banner then heads over to Whitfield’s house to let him know what’s going on, but he unknowingly walks into another session of sadism as Whitfield and Lindy teach their new “doll”, Mabel, about pain and pleasure through some severe physical torture.
But Banner’s warning of Spencer’s arrival doesn’t worry Whitfield. On the way out, a disturbed Banner points to Mabel and says, “That’s somebody’s daughter,” which, of course, does nothing to discourage his boss from his games.
Pete Plenty Clouds gets laid to rest
Unfortunately, those who believed Pete met his end during the climactic finale of Episode 5 were right. In the desert, Marshal Kent examines Pete’s body while Father Renaud watches from the side, disgusted.
As Renaud points out, they’re looking for a girl, but Kent has been more than happy to kill plenty of men and boys on their journey. Having had enough of his violent ways, Renaud takes out a gun and shoots Kent in the chest, killing him.

Meanwhile, Teonna and Runs His Horse start worrying about Pete’s disappearance. The next morning, they head out and find his body, leaving Teonna in floods of tears for her lost love. Runs His Horse reminds her that Pete “gave his life to free you,” and tells her they should finally go home.
Unfortunately, they don’t know Renaud is not far behind them. Later that night, he sneaks up on their camp. Runs His Horse spots him, but before he can get a shot, Renaud shoots him dead on the ground.
Teonna wakes up to Renaud holding a gun to her face. He tries to force her into confessing and repenting for her sins, but she holds strong, insisting that she doesn’t regret killing those nuns. Confused and angered, he goes to shoot her.
Thankfully, the gun doesn’t go off, and Teonna uses the opportunity to throw hot coals into his face. He screams in pain, and she manages to jump up and stab him several times, all before grabbing a gun and killing him.
As she discovers Runs His Horse’s body, she lets out an agonised scream. She’s free, but at the cost of the few people she loves.
Rest in peace, Jack Dutton
The bloodbath continues over at the ranch as Cara gets bad news: Jack, not wanting to be stuck at the ranch while Jacob waits at the station, has gone out on his own to catch up. As Cara confesses, Jack is a “stupid boy” and finds himself in trouble when he runs into Banner’s men, including the formidable Clyde.

They come to a standstill in the forest, but when Jack makes a thinly veiled threat about his shooting skills, Clyde whips out a gun and shoots him in the torso. Jack falls from his horse and into the snow, defenseless as Clyde gets another shot in, effortlessly killing him.
They tie up his body and drag him into the woods, leaving the rest of the Duttons none the wiser about their new loss.
Spencer and Alex get a little closer to home
Spencer is finally on a train (a real one this time), but gets into a new delay when he gets word that the snow has blocked any trains from going any further. His new route to avoid the storm is from Sioux Falls to Billings, which will still cost him a lot of time.
Meanwhile, in Chicago, Alex is catching up with Paul and Hillary about her adventures so far. They’re fascinated and impressed by her “odyssey,” and together, they decide they want to help her even more.

Paul suggests they take the car and drive her to Montana, a difficult journey that may take several days. After some brief planning, the three bundle into his ill-prepared car and set off to face the road ahead.
They drive for hours and hours, through the night and across the country. But their first real red flag comes when they stop for gas, where the shopkeeper advises them to ditch the car and take a train. Naturally, they ignore her wisdom and strive forward.
As they reach stormier paths, Alex falls asleep in the backseat, leaving Paul and Hillary to shiver in the front seat and try to drink their way into warmth. “Quite the adventure,” Paul remarks.
As Spencer gets on a new train to Deadwood, Alex awakens to the car completely stalled. Paul is gone, and when she reaches into the front seat to ask Hillary what’s going on, she finds her dead: frozen and stiff.

Alex steps outside, finding them in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by snow. Paul’s body lays on the ground not far from the car. Clearly, they ran out of gas and died from exposure while Paul made an effort to find help.
Traumatised and stranded, Alex cowers in the backseat, trying to keep herself warm. As the camera pans out to the snowy landscape, Elsa’s voiceover comes overhead to warn us, “There have been five mass extinctions on this planet, where almost all life was eradicated, its occupiers cleansed from this place. It only stands to reason that a sixth one is coming.”
