1923 needs a Season 3 and this scene proves it

Alex on bench in 1923

We’re not even halfway through 1923 Season 2 yet, but there’s one scene in Episode 3 that already justifies Taylor Sheridan sorting out a third season. (Please!)

1923 Season 2 has made quick work of trying to wrap up this era of the Dutton family. Spencer and Alex are crossing oceans to get back to Montana, Jacob and Cara are trying to survive the winter, and Liz and Jack are at a crossroads in their relationship.

That’s a lot to cover, but so far, it seems as though Season 2 is the final installment of this Yellowstone spinoff. 1923 cast members have said as much, and Taylor Sheridan has always maintained the idea of a two-season arc.

But we think that’s a mistake, and this Season 2 scene just proved that there’s far more of this story to tell. (Whether you like it or not.)

1923 Season 2 won’t be enough for Yellowstone fans

It’s no secret that fans only had one wish for this second season, and that was for Spencer and Alex to reunite in Montana in the first few episodes.

As the most interesting characters in the show by a mile, we wanted nothing more than to see them return home and watch as Spencer reintegrated himself into ranch life, all while Alex discovered what it really meant to be a Dutton.

But alas, that’s not looking likely. In fact, Episode 3 just proved there’s so much more on the way when it comes to the couple’s respective journeys. In short: they won’t be in Montana anytime soon.

In fact, if we were to place money on it, it’s very likely those two won’t step foot on the Dutton Ranch until the final episode of the season, and the series finale.

How do we know this? Well, Alex more or less said so herself. After her torturous processing at Ellis Island, she finally arrives in New York and heads to Grand Central Station to catch a train. She gets plenty of weary warnings about her safety, and while she hides out upstairs, we get another spoken-word letter to Spencer.

She laments about her journey so far, and asks, “What calamity awaits to keep me from you? What fresh hell has the devil devised?” This is followed by Alex stepping into the ladies’ bathroom, where she’s unknowingly followed by a creepy, suspicious looking man.

Knowing Taylor Sheridan’s worst habit (and knowing what we do about upcoming episodes), this is a big hint that Alex’s journey is far from over. In fact, it may have only just begun.

Season 3 could cover new (old) ground for these Duttons

Because of the globe-trotting nature of 1923, the Western TV show appears to be missing the most important element of Yellowstone: the Dutton ranch. We keep cutting back to short scenes featuring Cara and Liz at the ranch, trying to get through a wild and brutal winter.

But this isn’t the ranch we know and love. In an ideal world, all the Duttons would be together, working alongside each other to protect their land and thrive on it. That includes Spencer and Alex.

Jack and Liz in 1923

If Season 2 is focused on those two racing across the country to get back to the homestead, then Season 3 can focus on what really matters: the Duttons’ debt to Donald Whitfield, and how they fight back to keep the property.

That fight would be far more exciting with Spencer and Alex working alongside Jacob, Cara, Jack, and Liz, and bring us back to our favourite Yellowstone moments: the family working together against the bigger evil (real estate moguls).

This would also allow for Season 3 to explore new dynamics, and answer questions any good Dutton fan would have. How does Alex fit in with Cara and Liz? Will Spencer agree with Jacob’s method of running the ranch? And what does the next era of cattle ranching look like through the Great Depression?

Maybe this is all just wishful thinking. An attempt at coming up with another plot just to have to not say goodbye to this particular spinoff. However, when it comes to the Yellowstone universe, there are so many more stories to tell. And before we move onto the others, maybe we could focus on giving this one the ending it deserves.
