SonyThe Last of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann has said fans shouldn’t bet on the PlayStation franchise receiving a Part 3.
While The Last of Us Part 2 closed most of its dangling story threads at the end, many players continue to wonder whether a third entry may eventually be in the cards.
Neil Druckmann previously stated he and Part 2 co-writer Halley Gross wrote an outline for a story set after the sequel’s events. In 2021, in fact, he told the Script Apart podcast that while Naughty Dog was not producing the idea at the time, “I hope one day [it] can see the light of day.”
He shared similar thoughts in 2024’s Grounded II documentary, saying, “it does feel like there is one more chapter to the story.” Years removed from these conversations, Druckmann’s latest comments suggest he now has a different outlook.
Series creator casts doubt on The Last of Us Part 3 game
During an interview with Variety to discuss HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2, executive producer Neil Druckmann was asked about the prospect of a third game installment.
He, obviously, couldn’t share much in the way of concrete details about Naughty Dog’s plans for future projects. However, the producer did advise players not to hold their breaths for a Part 3 – the HBO series could be the last we see of TLoU.
Druckmann told the outlet, “I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of Last of Us. This could be it.”
HBOConsidering the divisive fan opinions about the sequel’s conclusion, the reception to Druckmann’s latest statement could go either way.
There are those who believe the somewhat ambigious ending should be left as is, while others want Ellie’s and Abby’s stories to wrap up on more solid ground.
And it remains to be seen how much of the narrative will be translated to television, especially since HBO executive Francesca Orsi told Deadline the show could last for four seasons.
