A Super Smash Bros Ultimate pro’s wild pop off is sparking backlash from the community – and even gun threats.
On February 23, Wario and Steve main Laurent ‘crêpe salée’ Vorburger emerged victorious at gamescom LAN x CGN Open in Cologne, Germany.
During his dominant tournament run, the French prodigy took on his fellow countryman Arda ‘Raflow’ Imrek and picked up the win, prompting a controversial celebration from the upstart.
After taking Raflow’s last stock, crêpe salée slammed the desk hard with his controller, which turned the Nintendo Switch off. He then began flipping off his beaten opponent before jumping triumphantly into the air.
While Smash players are no strangers to overdoing it with their pop-offs, this rubbed some players the wrong way… and the backlash even had one fan making gun threats.
Smash pro’s big win sparks gun threat
Footage of crêpe salée’s win began circulating on X, sparking a debate over whether or not such a celebration should be allowed.
When Smash commentator TKbreezy shared the video, one fan called the celebration “assault,” prompting further debate.
“I think this is just a really obnoxious pop-off that deserves AT MOST a warning,” TKbreezy suggested.
“At this grown age, why give a warning for disorderly conduct? He’s lucky he ain’t did that to the wrong person, ‘cuz if it was me, I’m punching the sh*t out him,” another fan, going by EloSmash, replied.
This response drew its own backlash, with concerns that someone would attack crêpe salée over his celebration.
“Wanting to punch someone ’cause of that makes you way more psycho than anyone there,” one stated.
“Because I am actually crazy. If you went to school with me you’ll know the amount of fights I’ve been in,” EloSmash shot back.
As the arguments continued, EloSmash followed this up by posting a video of a gun and threatened the individual he was exchanging words with.
“Lemme find out where yo b*tch ass live lmfaooo,” he mocked, and issued a warning accusing him of showing a fake gun. “Stand in front of it if you truly believe it’s fake.”
This gun threat started going viral, amassing over 500K views in under a day and even getting the attention of crêpe salée himself, who couldn’t believe his celebration caused so much drama.

“My face when I see the origin of the confusion WOW,” he said.
It’s not clear if EloSmash is the alt account of anyone of note in the community or if they actually attend tournaments. As such, he hasn’t received any discipline or bans from events at the time of writing.
This isn’t the first time controversy has erupted at a Smash event. Back in 2023, a Daisy player assaulted his opponent after getting knocked out of a tournament.
