Zekrom is returning to 5-Star Raid Battles in Pokemon Go along with other Legendaries to celebrate the Unova region, so we’ve put together details of its weaknesses and the best counters to help you defeat it.
Introduced in the Generation 5 games, Zekrom appears on the box art for Pokemon White. The Legendary creature is part of the Tao trio, along with Reshiram and Kyurem.
Now, Niantic’s mobile game will feature Zekrom in 5-star Raids to celebrate many events, including the Road to Unova and both the in-person and Global celebrations for the 2025 Pokemon Go Tour. So, here’s all you need to know to challenge this intimidating creature.
Zekrom weaknesses in Pokemon Go
Zekrom is a dual Dragon/Electric-type Pokemon, which means it’s weak to Dragon, Fairy, Ground, and Ice-type moves. This leaves a lot of options available for trainers, as many powerful Pokemon with these types can be found in the game.
As for Zekrom’s resistances, you’ll want to avoid using Electric, Fire, Flying, Grass, Steel, and Water-type moves or Pokemon as they won’t do much damage to the Legendary and they’ll faint faster.
Zekrom best counters
These are some of the best counters to defeat Zekrom in Pokemon Go:

We’ve included a mix of Megas, Legendaries, Shadow, and more common Pokemon in the table above, so there should be something for every trainer to use.
If you don’t have any of those counters or their alternate forms, use your strongest Pokemon to target Zekrom’s weaknesses. Just make sure that your team is properly leveled up and has matching movesets.
How to get Zekrom in Pokemon Go
As with other Legendaries, trainers looking to catch Zekrom will have to first challenge and defeat it in 5-Star Raid battles. After doing so, they’ll be given Premier Balls to attempt a catch, though the amount of balls they get will depend on their battle performance.
As mentioned before, Zekrom will be featured multiple times in what’s left of the Dual Destiny season. First, it will appear as a 5-Star Raid boss during the Pokemon Go Tour Unova in-person events, which will take place in New Taipei City and Los Angeles from February 21, 2025, until February 23, 2025.

Then, it will be featured on February 28, 2025, for the Road to Unova event (with the Charged Move Fusion Bolt), to eventually come back for the Go Tour Global celebrations which will run from March 1, 2025, until March 2, 2025.
Catching a Legendary is difficult, but you can improve your chances by using Golden Razz Berries and landing Excellent Curveball Throws. You’ll also get more Premier Balls for raiding in a Gym that belongs to your team.
How to fuse Zekrom with Kyurem
During the Go Tour Unova celebrations, both Black & White Kyurem will make their Pokemon Go debuts, so players who have the three Legendaries from the Tao Trio will get to fuse them up as they like.
To fuse Zekrom and Kyurem to get Black Kyurem, players must have one of each Pokemon, plus 1,000 Volt Fusion Energy, 30 Zekrom Candy, and 30 Kyurem Candy.

Volt Fusion Energy
The new item called Volt Fusion Energy is a very rare source of power that can only be obtained in the game by defeating multiple Black Kyurem in Raid battles.
Fused Kyurem will remain in this form until the player separates them. But worry not, as separating the Pokemon will have no cost at all.
Zekrom CP in Pokemon Go
As with every Raid Boss in the game, the CP Zekrom has during a Raid battle won’t be the same once you manage to catch it after defeating it. Plus, certain types of weather can increase such CP.
Raid Boss CP | 53,394 |
CP range once captured | 2217 – 2307 |
Windy/Rain weather CP range | 2771 – 2884 |
Zekrom max CP (Level 50) | 4565 |
Zekrom stats & moves

ATTACK | DEFENSE | STAMINA | CP |

Can Zekrom be Shiny?
Yes, Zekrom can be Shiny in Pokemon Go, as this special variation was added to the game in December 2021. Players are in luck, as Shiny Zekrom will be up for grabs for those who manage to find one in Raid battles.

Unfortunately, this Shiny is very difficult to spot, as the only differences between both versions is the color change on the eyes (from red to blue) and the tip of the horns (from blue to green). The generator on its tail also changes from blue to green, but might be even harder to spot that.
If you’re hoping to find a Shiny Zekrom, be prepared for a long search as there’s no special method to secure an encounter or even increase your chances. You’ll simply need to battle as many Zekrom as you can.
That’s everything there is to know about Zekrom’s weaknesses and best counters in Pokemon Go. Remember to check out the latest Pokemon Go events, including the current Community Day and Spotlight Hours.
