
James Carter Cathcart, a beloved voice actor best known for his work on the Pokemon anime, has died at the age of 71.
Cathcart was a key figure in the English-language adaptation of Pokemon, lending his voice to several of the franchise’s most recognizable characters. He played Gary Oak, Ash Ketchum’s rival, as well as Professor Oak, the wise mentor guiding young trainers. Cathcart was also the voice behind two of Team Rocket’s most iconic members: James and his friend, Meowth.
For decades, his performances helped shape the childhoods of millions of fans around the world. His range, humor, and heart brought these characters to life and became an essential part of the show’s global success.
Team Rocket voice actor dies aged 71
Fellow Pokemon voice actor Erica Schroeder shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, honoring Cathcart’s life and legacy.
“Rest in peace dear sweet man. I will miss you. The community will miss you. The world will miss you,” Schroeder wrote. “One of the most joyful, exuberant, kind-hearted and talented souls no longer walks with us. James Carter Cathcart you were one of a kind, a gentle, beautiful, playful genius and I was happy to call you my friend.”
She described him as a master of many talents—“the pen, piano, and microphone”—and remembered him as a loving father, husband, and friend to many.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of James Carter Cathcart, the voice behind Professor Oak, Gary Oak, James and Meowth of Team Rocket, and other iconic characters for the Pokemon animated series over many years,” they said.
“In addition to his voice work, James provided over 700 episodes of scripts for the animated series, shaping the stories that defined generations of fans. From the very first episode to the final journeys, James brought warmth, humor, and unforgettable charm to the world of Pokemon.
“His talent gave life to some of our most beloved characters, and his legacy will continue to reach the hearts of Trainers everywhere. James’s voice will always be part of our adventure. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends.”
Cathcart had stepped away from voice acting in recent years following a cancer diagnosis, with his final work on Pokemon wrapping in 2023 after nearly 25 years with the series.
