Mega Altaria is returning to Mega Raids in Pokemon Go for a limited time, and many trainers will no doubt be wondering how to take down this unique dual Dragon/Fairy-type Mega Evolution.
Dragon and Fairy-type Pokemon are some of the most sought-after by the franchise players. However, despite their incredible popularity, there’s only one creature in the franchise that boasts both types, and that’s Mega Altaria.
This unique dual Dragon/Fairy creature made its debut in 2021 and, since then, has been making sporadic comebacks to Niantic’s game.
If you’re looking to challenge Mega Altaria during its time as a Mega Raid boss, you must first learn the Pokemon’s weaknesses and the best counters to exploit them.
Mega Altaria weaknesses in Pokemon Go
While regular Altaria is a dual Dragon/Flying-type, Mega Altaria has a unique Dragon/Fairy-type combo. This means it’s weak against Fairy, Ice, Poison, and Steel-type moves, so challengers must focus on these when building a team to battle this foe in Mega Raids.
On the other hand, Mega Altaria is resistant to Bug, Dark, Dragon, Electric, Fighting, Fire, Grass, and Water-type attacks, giving it many advantages over many popular Pokemon.
Mega Altaria best counters
Here are some of the best counters to use against Mega Altaria in Pokemon Go:
POKEMON | SPRITE | BEST MOVESET |
---|---|---|
Mega Gardevoir | ![]() | Charm & Dazzling Gleam |
Mega Gengar | ![]() | Lick & Sludge Bomb |
Shadow Metagross | ![]() | Bullet Punch & Meteor Mash |
Shadow Dialga | ![]() | Metal Claw & Iron Head |
Dusk Mane Necrozma | ![]() | Metal Claw & Sunsteel Strike |

Mamoswine | ![]() | Powder Snow & Avalanche |
We’ve included a mix of Megas, Legendaries, Shadow, and more common Pokemon in the table above, so there should be something for every trainer to use.
If you don’t have any of those counters or their alternate forms, use your strongest Fairy, Ice, Poison, or Steel-type Pokemon to target Mega Altaria’s weaknesses. Just make sure that your team is properly leveled up and has matching movesets.
How to get Mega Altaria in Pokemon Go
As with all the other Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Go, the only way players can get Mega Altaria in the game is through Mega Raids. Luckily, this unique creature will be back as a Raid boss from May 26, 2025, until June 3, 2025, right after Mega Gyarados leaves.
However, remember that players cannot catch Mega Altaria in its Mega Evolved form. Instead, once they defeat it, they’ll have the chance to catch a regular Altaria using the Premiere Balls given – the number they get will be tied to their battling performance.
Then, they can temporarily Mega Evolve their strongest standard Altaria once they stock up on the required Mega Energy to do so.
How to evolve Altaria into Mega Altaria
As mentioned above, when a trainer defeats and catches a Mega Evolved Pokemon, it returns to its regular form. This means that every time they want to trigger a Mega Evolution, they must use Mega Energy.
To Mega Evolve your own Altaria in Pokemon Go, you’ll need to collect 300 Mega Altaria Energy to trigger this temporary form for the first time. Then, the amount required will drop to 60, then to 30, and eventually to 15.

Mega Energy
Players can gather Mega Energy by constantly defeating Mega Evolved Pokemon in Mega Raids. Additionally, they can earn some more by completing Field Research Tasks and by setting their Pokemon (in this case, Altaria) as their Buddy and going out for a spin.
It’s worth noting that for Altaria to be able to collect Mega Energy while walking around, it must have been Mega Evolved at least once before.
Mega Altaria CP in Pokemon Go
As with every Raid Boss in the game, the CP Mega Altaria has during a Mega Raid battle won’t be the same once you manage to catch its regular form. Plus, certain types of weather can increase such CP.
Raid Boss CP | 34,320 |
CP range once captured | 1727 – 1807 |
Windy/Cloudy weather CP range | 2159 – 2259 |
Mega Altaria max CP (Level 50) | 3576 |
Mega Altaria stats & moves
As a dual Dragon/Fairy-type Pokemon, Mega Altaria has the following stats:

Can Mega Altaria be Shiny?
Yes, Mega Altaria can be Shiny in Pokemon Go, as this special variation was added to the game on the same day the Pokemon debuted.

Those searching for Shiny Mega Altaria can easily recognize it by its bright yellow body, which is usually light blue.
Keep in mind that the odds of finding a Shiny Pokemon are very low, and there’s no special technique to ensure an encounter. All you can do to increase your odds is challenge Mega Altaria as many times as you can during its time as a Mega Raid boss.
However, if you cannot find a Shiny Mega Altaria, another way to get one is by evolving a Shiny Swablu or regular Shiny Altaria all the way to its Mega stage.
That’s everything you need to know about Mega Altaria in Pokemon Go. Don’t forget to head over to the Spotlight Hour schedule and event calendar to stay updated, and for more on Mega Evolutions, check the costs and bonuses, as well as the Mega Evolutions missing from the game.
