Groudon is a powerful Legendary for Pokemon Go players to add to their collection and take on battles, mainly PvP. So, here’s how to catch the Pokemon Ruby mascot and whether or not it can be Shiny.
Introduced in Gen 3’s Hoenn region, Groudon is a Ground-type Legendary that has excelled in Pokemon Go since it was introduced into the game. Even more so after its Primal Reversion was released.
If you’re looking to capture Groudon in Niantic’s game now that it’s coming back for a limited time, here’s everything you need to know about encountering the Legendary.
How to get Groudon in Pokemon Go
Currently, there’s only one way players can get Groudon in Pokemon Go, and it’s through 5-Star Raid battles.
Luckily, the June Raid rotations brought the Ancient Pokemon back, so trainers can challenge and defeat it from June 5, 2025, until June 14, 2025.

Once they manage to defeat this mighty creature, trainers can attempt a catch using the limited amount of Premier Balls given at the end of the encounter.
Additionally, Groudon will be featured in a Raid Hour on June 11, 2025, from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM local time.
Previously, players were able to get a Groudon encounter as a reward for completing Special/Timed Research tasks, and they could also rescue its Shadow version from Giovanni‘s grasp.
How to evolve Groudon into Primal Groudon
To turn a regular Groudon into Primal Groudon, players will need 400 Primal Groudon Energy to kick off the process, which can be triggered on the Pokemon’s main page.
The Primal Reversion is a process that allows both Kyogre and Groudon to regain their true power by absorbing the energy of nature that surrounds us, and similar to Mega Evolutions, you can activate it only for a limited time.

Primal Energy
Primal Energy can be obtained by defeating Primal Groudon or Primal Kyogre in Raids, by completing specific Research tasks, or by walking with Groudon or Kyogre as a Buddy.
Groudon CP in Pokemon Go
As with every Raid Boss in the game, the CP that Groudon has during a Raid battle won’t be the same once you manage to catch it after defeating it. Plus, certain types of weather can increase such CP.
Raid Boss CP | 54,411 |
CP range once captured | 2260 – 2351 |
Sunny weather CP range | 2825 – 2939 |
Max CP (Level 50) | 4652 |

Can Groudon be Shiny?
Yes, Groudon can be Shiny in Pokemon Go, as it was added to Niantic’s game back in 2019 during the Hoenn Celebration event.

Shiny Groudon can be easily recognized thanks to its bright lime-green tone, which differs so much from its usual red body. In case you get a Shiny Groudon, you can turn it into a Shiny Primal Groudon too, though it’d be black with green claws.
It’s worth noting, though, that the odds of finding a Shiny Pokemon are very low, as there’s no special technique or method to secure an encounter. The only thing trainers can do to increase their chances is to hunt as many Groudon as they can until they come across what they’re looking for.
That’s all you need to catch Groudon in Pokemon Go. Don’t forget to check out the latest Pokemon Go events, including the current Community Day and Spotlight Hours.
