With the Kanto region’s Abra getting its own Spotlight Hour in Pokemon Go at the end of April 2025, many trainers will be wondering how to catch and evolve it, and whether its Shiny version is available.
Psychic-type Pokemon are some of the most sought-after by players in Niantic’s game, as they are strong contenders in the Go Battle League.
Moreover, in Abra’s case, its ultimate form – Mega Alakazam – is one of the best fighters and Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Go, so players might be wondering how to get one and whether or not it can be Shiny.
How to get Abra in Pokemon Go
Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam have been part of Pokemon Go since the game launched, and currently players have different ways to find the base stage:
- As a wild spawn (increased chances during the upcoming April 29, 2025 Spotlight Hour)
- As a Research reward
When Raid rotations allow it, this Psychic-type creature can be seen as a Tier 1 Raid boss, too.
Previously, trainers were also able to hatch it from 2km and 5km Eggs, and up until February 2023, could save its Shadow version from Team GO Rocket Grunts.
How to evolve Abra into Kadabra and Alakazam
Abra is part of an iconic three-member family. This usually means players will need to gather a lot of Candy to get all forms. However, there’s an alternative to get Abra’s final stage, Alakazam.
To evolve Abra into Kadabra, players will need to collect 25 Candy. Then, they’ll have to collect an extra 100 Candy to turn Kadabra into Alakazam.
In case you cannot reach the Candy requirements, you can trade Kadabra to another player to trigger the final evolution instead.
If you’re struggling to collect enough Candy, remember to use Pinap Berries to increase the amount you get per catch. Then, send your duplicate Abra to Professor Willow for a few more.

How to evolve Alakazam into Mega Alakazam
While regular evolutions require Candy, as the name suggests, Mega Evolutions require Mega Energy. So, every time a trainer wants to trigger this temporary Mega form, they must gather the required amount.
The first time a player evolves a regular Alakazam into Mega Alakazam, they will require 200 Mega Energy. Once the effect is over, the amount will drop to 40, then 20, and finally 10.
Mega Energy
The most common method players can use to gather Mega Energy is by defeating Mega Evolved Pokemon in Mega Raids several times. Additionally, they can earn some more by completing Field Research Tasks and by setting their Pokemon (in this case, Alakazam) as their Buddy and going out for a walk.
It’s worth noting that for Alakazam to be able to collect Mega Energy while taking a spin, it must have been Mega Evolved at least once before.

Can Abra be Shiny?
Yes, Abra can be Shiny in Pokemon Go, as this alternate variation was added to the game during its Community Day back in 2020.
Shiny hunters will have a little bit of trouble spotting Shiny Abra, as the differences between the regular and Shiny version are barely noticeable, with a slightly lighter tone overall.
Those who manage to find a Shiny Abra and evolve it will be able to get Shiny Kadabra, Shiny Alakazam, and even Shiny Mega Alakazam. The first evolution suffers from the same tone problem, but the final stage and Mega Evolution have violet and purple tones on their chest, wrists, and knees to make them pop.
It’s worth noting, though, that the odds of finding a Shiny Pokemon are very low, as there’s no special technique or method to secure an encounter. The only thing trainers can do to increase their chances is to hunt as many Abra as they can until they come across what they’re looking for.
