Pokemon Go players after a Poochyena can stop searching, as this tiny mix between a dog and a hyena will spawn more often during the next Spotlight Hour. Here’s all you need to catch, evolve, and maybe find its Shiny version.
The pure Dark-type Poochyena was first introduced to the Pokemon franchise in Gen 3’s mainline games and made its way into Niantic’s game alongside the complete Hoenn region back in 2017.
This dog with a ferocious bite might not be the ultimate Pokemon Go fighter, but players can take advantage of its increased spawn rates to evolve it into Mightyena or to hunt for its Shiny variation.
How to get Poochyena in Pokemon Go
As of today, there’s only one way you can get a Poochyena in Pokemon Go:
- As a wild encounter (increased spawns during the May 20 Spotlight Hour)
Historically, players were able to find this fierce creature in 2km, 5km, and 7km Eggs, as a Tier 1 Raid boss, and as a Shadow Pokemon on Team GO Rocket Grunt encounters.
Additionally, Poochyena was featured as a reward for completing Field Research Tasks such as “Catch 5 Pokemon: Adventures Abound” or the Timed Research “Eerie Echoes – 2nd part: Make 2 Curveball Throws”.
How to evolve Poochyena into Mightyena in Pokemon Go
Poochyena is part of a two-member family, which means it only has one evolution. Luckily for trainers, the process is very straightforward, as it doesn’t require any special items or requirements, just Candy.
To evolve Poochyena into Mightyena, players will need to collect 50 Candy.

With Poochyena spawning nonstop during the upcoming Spotlight Hour, players won’t have any trouble gathering the required amount of Candy.
However, to do it faster, they can always use Pinap Berries to increase the amount of Candy they receive per catch. Then, they can transfer their extra Poochyena to Professor Willow in exchange for a few more.
They can also set the Pokemon as their Buddy and take it for long walks, or trade some Rare Candy for more Poochyena Candy.

Can Poochyena be Shiny?
Yes, Poochyena can be Shiny in Pokemon Go, as this special variation was added to the game during the Lunar New Year in 2018.
Shiny hunters searching for Shiny Poochyena won’t have any trouble spotting it, as the Bite Pokemon’s regular light gray fur changes to yellow, while the darker details on its face and paws turn brown.
Subsequently, those who evolve a Shiny Poochyena into a Shiny Mightyena will obtain a gold and brown version of the wolf and hyena lookalike. Moreover, it will have very bright blue eyes and nose instead of the usual red.
It’s worth noting, though, that the odds of finding a Shiny Pokemon are very low, as there’s no special technique or method to secure an encounter.
The only thing trainers can do to increase their chances is to hunt as many Poochyena as they can until they come across what they’re looking for. Remember to take advantage of the Poochyena Spotlight Hour to do so.
