Overwatch player’s must-see stalling tactic divides community with controversial play

Wrecking Ball in Overwatch 2

The Overwatch community was divided over an effective but controversial play made by a Wrecking Ball that got their team close to victory.

Wrecking Ball is a chaotic character in Overwatch, a self-sufficient behemoth knocking enemies around and causing mayhem in the backline. But his self-focused playstyle has made him a bit unpopular to play with, as there are many players who don’t know how to work around his kit.

A viral thread highlighted this issue, with one Wrecking Ball player committing to a controversial play which even earned them several reports at the end of the match. Players were conflicted on whether or not this play was even worth it and if the reports were justified.

A stall for the ages

In this play, the Wrecking Ball player found a unique way to stall on the Oasis City Center map. Heading to the enclosed building in the middle of the point, Wrecking Ball used his grappling hook to hang onto the ceiling, hiding from the enemy team while stalling the point. This allowed the team to get 99% towards the point’s progress, although they eventually lost at the end.

The community was initially impressed by the Wrecking Ball’s stall, but perhaps more surprised that the enemy team wasn’t able to find the ball in the first place.

“Amazing stall, they didn’t look hard enough to find him lmfao,” wrote one user.

The play was risky, however, as the Wrecking Ball was not contributing to any fights. While they were contesting the point for a long time, they were also permanently out of fights, which made it impossible for their team to win anyways. In due time, the Wrecking Ball’s team lost the round.

“Legitimate move, but you should be helping out once you hit 99%. [Seems like your] team needed their tank,” said another user.

Most OW2 players acknowledged that the Wrecking Ball didn’t break any rules or exploit any bugs, so there wasn’t anything technically reportable about the situation. Still, there could be some interpretations that the player was ultimately AFK throughout the match.

“I mean if it’s your team reporting you for not helping them, I can understand,” one player said. “They’re obviously struggling without a tank because they failed to cap back despite already having the point.”

“Stalling a point is allowed, but your team is never gonna win a 4v5 if you just sit there and watch them all die,” said another player. “It could definitely be called throwing.”

At the end of the day, the situation doesn’t seem like something ban-worthy. But it does feel as if the Wrecking Ball ended up losing some points of respect as it wasn’t the smartest play to never help their team at all.
