Overwatch 2 pro players are already optimizing Hero Perks in the new patch, giving them a massive leg-up in crucial moments.

Hero Perks in Overwatch 2 are a breath of fresh air, adding new strategy to a game that was once growing stagnant. As Hero Perks are a dramatic departure from typical Overwatch gameplay, pros are already looking for the best ways to optimize the mechanic.

Some have already managed to optimize one niche scenario with Hero Perks that can make a major difference in fights. This trick takes advantage of how players unlock Hero Perks early in Overtime, which allows you to freely swap heroes without danger.

This Hero Perks trick can help you win games

Normally, Hero Perks are unlocked gradually throughout a game the more you play a hero. Hero Perk progress is reset after you swap off a character, which disincentivizes swapping. However, this scenario changes in some Overtime scenarios. On certain maps, after reaching Overtime, all Hero Perks will be automatically unlocked and heroes will be level 3 by default.

However, players will still need to unlock and choose which perks they would like to use. However, pros have discovered a simple but effective trick that makes this process more seamless and allows you to swap heroes more comfortably. Before a round starts in Overtime, players should pick each hero they play and level up each perk before the match begins.

Demonstrating this trick, high ranked Support player mL7support swapped to every Support character and picked out his preferred perks in case he wanted to swap in the middle of the round.

“In extra rounds, you can change to all of the heroes that you desire to play and not waste any time mid-game [picking perks],” said mL7.

Many characters have perks that can enhance movement abilities, such as Sojourn, so this trick also makes it easier for players to swap and contest an objective during Overtime.

“Secret perk tech, it’s really good for characters like Moira to touch the point in Overtime,” mL7 explained.

While this trick is only applicable in Overtime situations, many players will choose not to swap heroes in these rounds due to the perk selection. By doing this, you allow yourself to swap characters and counter an enemy hero when the time comes. It’s also likely a bit more useful with Tank and Support characters, since they have a smaller roster compared to DPS characters.
