Villagers may only wander around one part of Minecraft, but they’re extremely important thanks to their trading mechanic. Though you need to understand the villagers’ jobs before you can get the loot you want.
Just like the real world, villagers all have different jobs and specialties; some are better at blacksmithing, others at fishing, and the occasional one at being a complete nitwit (that’s their name, don’t come for me).
However, despite it being similar to our world, understanding how these work, all the job types, and most importantly, how to change their jobs, isn’t really explained. We’ve got all you need to know right here.
All Minecraft villager jobs

There are a total of 15 different job types in Minecraft, each offering a different job site block (to signify their role) and tradeable items. You can usually tell what job the villager has, depending on their clothing.
Villager Job | Description | Item Block |
---|---|---|
Armorer ![]() | Purchase armor and chainmail | Blast Furnace |
Butcher ![]() | Buy meat and trade Emeralds | Smoker |
Catographer ![]() | Maps and patterns can be purchased from Cartographers | Cartography Table |
Cleric ![]() | Clerics sell magical items, including potions and Bottle ‘o Enchanting | Brewing Stand |
Farmer ![]() | Farmers stock food and brewing ingredients | Composter |
Some villagers can be unemployed, meaning they have no job site block, or they can be Nitwits, meaning that they both do not currently have a job site block and cannot claim a job.
The green robes designate nitwits, and are the only classification of villagers that players will not be able to trade with. While unemployed villagers also cannot make trades, once they have been given a job site block, players will be able to trade with them as normal.
How to change a villager’s job
You may find a village that does not contain the type of villager you wish to trade with, but luckily, you can change a villager’s job.
If you need to change a villager’s job, follow the steps below:
- Build or find the job block that matches to the job you want the villager to have.
- Destroy the job site block that the villager is currently using.

- Place the block near the villager.
- Wait for the villager to interact with the new job site block.

- Once they do so, they’ll change into their new clothing.
This is a pretty universal method, and can work with all Villagers except Nitwits, as they cannot hold any jobs within Minecraft!
Can you change the Wandering Traders’ profession?
There is no way to change a Wandering Trader’s job in Minecraft, as they are technically a part of the village, and their job is not one of the ones designated by a job site block.
Wandering Traders are villagers that will roam around the Minecraft world and may appear within your home every now and then. They have some decent trades more often than not, but they function completely separately from the villagers within a village.
