The Thing has finally arrived in Marvel Rivals Season 1.5 alongside the Human Torch to complete the Fantastic Four characters in the popular hero shooter.
He’s a hero who’s shaping up to dominate the meta thanks to a lot of resilience, great team buffs, and solid defenses. You’ll need a solid understanding of how his weapons, abilities, and best team comps work before you can make the most of his on the battlefield, however.

How to play The Thing
Given his tanky abilities, players will want to instantly use Yancy Street Charge to get into the heat of battle fast. If you do this in the right spot, you’ll lift enemies in your path and deal damage to them, so even getting into a deadly spot can be powerful.

Once there, smack the enemy with your (your fists) and use your ultimate to throw enemies in the air when things get a little bit busy. On top of this, you’ll want to keep an eye out for your fellow teammates. If they’re struggling, use your Embattled Leap and reduce the damage they take.
After all, you’re a tank, and tanks support the team by both taking hits and ensuring the DPS’ don’t get hurt too much.
Best team comp
In terms of the best team comp for The Thing in Marvel Rivals, we recommend pairing him with the following characters:
- Wolverine
- Hulk
- Mantis
- Invisible Woman
Wolverine

Thanks to their Team-Up ability, your first team comp will need to be Wolverine. This badass tank can be thrown into the head of battle by both Hulk and The Thing.
Additionally, The Thing is an anti-tank tank. His ability to take CC to the face without having to worry much will make him great at pressuring other frontliners.
So, simply grab your nearest Wolverine, throw him into the middle of the fight, then use your Furious Charge to join him and wreak havoc.
Check out our Wolverine guide for more details on the character.
Hulk

Along with Wolverine, another ideal pairing would be Hulk, for very similar reasons. This character is a deadly tank that can stand back to back with The Thing and keep almost the entire enemy team at bay and live to tell the tale.
Combine this with his Incredible Leap, which knocks flying enemies to the ground, and you have a way for both characters to bring a fighter crashing down and in the way of two sets of powerful fists and the health to boot.
Check out our Hulk guide for more details on the character.
Mantis

Every tank needs a healer by their side to keep them in the fight. After all, your health isn’t unlimited, and being surrounded by so many enemies can make that apparent pretty quickly. As such, you’ll want Mantis, one of the strongest Strategists in Marvel Rivals.
Mantis can use her Life Orbs to increase The Thing’s damage, and health, and even grant Healing Over Time, to keep those attacks on The Thing doing very little to take him down. Her long-range healing also comes in handy, keeping the enemy on The Thing, and all players safe from too much harm.
Check out our Mantis guide for more details on the character.
Invisible Woman

The Thing’s shared Team Up Ability with Invisible Woman can make him even more difficult to kill in Marvel Rivals. She grants the Fantastic Four damage resistance and The Thing will also be able to generate Bonus Health once the ability has been activated.
If he was hard to take down before, this assist leaves The Thing virtually indestructible for a short period of time. It’s well worth pairing these two together for the additional survivability benefits.
For the best way to use her, check out our Invisible Woman guide.
Counters
If you find yourself struggling against Thre Thing, we’d recommend using the following heroes:
Iron Man

The Thing’s biggest drawback is that he’s pretty useless against any enemies that can fly or access higher ground. This means heroes with high mobility like Iron Man are effective counters. You can use his Repulsor Rifle to safely whittle away at The Thing’s health from a distance, and activate your Armor Overdrive to boost its damage.
While his Ultimate likely won’t be enough to one-shot The Thing either, you can still deal a sizable chunk of damage with it as long as you’ve got good aim.
Check out our Iron Man guide for the best ways to play him.
Star-Lord

Star-Lord is another high-mobility hero that can counter The Thing. His biggest advantage is being able to get out of sticky situations so if you notice The Thing about to leap at you, quickly get out of the way and reposition yourself so you can flank instead.
His free-flight ability can keep him out of The Thing’s reach and you can use the time to fire your Element Guns and rapidly chip away at his health.
For the best way to use him, check out our Star-Lord guide.
Groot

The Thing’s Embattled Leap buff can only apply its damage reduction if he gets near an ally so Groot is a great counter in these situations.
Activate an Ironwood Wall to cut The Thing off from his teammates. Not only will this stop him from using the buff but it will also damage him. It’s all the better if he was aiming to help a teammate who’s already struggling with low health as it gives your teammates a window to move in for the kill.
We’ve also got a full Groot guide you can check out.
