The Galacta’s Cosmic Adventure event in Marvel Rivals brings a ton of free cosmetics, but fans are disappointed that the only skin on offer is for a character they usually avoid.
While there are plenty of costumes available to purchase on the store, Marvel Rivals has a number of ways to earn free costumes for your favorite heroes. These are rewards for completing achievements or ranking up in Competitive, but the most common way is in-game events.
In the past, we saw the Winter Celebration and Spring Festival events come with skins for Jeff the Land Shark and Star Lord. Now, Galacta’s Cosmic Adventure is about to begin, but players were frustrated to see that the main reward is a costume for one of the worst characters in the game.
Marvel Rivals players confused by free Black Widow event skin
The headline reward in Galacta’s Cosmic Adventure is the “Mrs. Barnes” skin for Black Widow, which gives the sharpshooter a western look that’s not a million miles away from Overwatch 2’s Ashe. But while players have praised the skin itself, they’re disappointed with the character it’s for.
Black Widow is considered to be one of the weakest heroes in Marvel Rivals, as shown in our tier list, and she features the lowest pick rate across both Quick Play and Competitive. Although she can pick off weaker enemies with her sniper, a general lack of damage and versatility has meant that she’s been mostly forgotten by many players.
So, when a Reddit user posted the new event skin, plenty of fans criticized the decision to make a Black Widow skin the main reward.
“All 7 Widow mains are rejoicing,” joked one player, before another added: “Cool skin. Unfortunately, it’s for black widow.”
“Why do they give Black Widow so much love while also fine tuning her to be as bad as possible?” asked a third.
Some speculated that NetEase could be using this as a way to get players to try out lesser used characters like Black Widow, in an effort to boost her pick rate.
Another reply said: “Why another event skin for one of the least played characters in the game? Is this how they’re trying to get people to play her?”
However, there were also many replies who simply welcomed the free skin, regardless of the character it’s for. Plus, with the Season 2 update around the corner, there’s every chance that Black Widow could get a buff that lets her compete with the likes of Winter Soldier and Human Torch.
