The latest Marvel Rivals update comes with a number of balancing changes, including a huge buff to the game’s most overpowered Duelist.
With such a huge lineup of iconic characters, there are always some that are stronger than others. The likes of Cloak and Dagger and Winter Soldier have dominated the meta, while heroes like Black Widow have struggled to find a place.
NetEase usually shakes things up with each major update, but they also roll out smaller patches to address any issues mid-season. The March 13 update comes with some significant balancing changes that could have a drastic impact on the pick rates, including a major buff to an already OP Duelist.
Human Torch set to take over meta after major buff
The Human Torch is already one of the strongest heroes in Marvel Rivals after arriving in Season 1.5, and we ranked him in S-tier in our character tier list. But the March 13 patch will make him even better, by significantly improving his main abilities.
First of all, the speed of his primary attack, Fire Cluster, will be raised from 120m/s to 150m/s. This means you can hurl fire at targets much quicker, decreasing the need to lead your shots and making him much easier to use.

Johnny will also throw 14 projectiles in each cluster, up from 12, so each attack is more likely to hit and can deal more damage if you manage to land all 14 onto a larger target.
His ultimate was also given a boost, despite a slight increase in energy cost. The initial damage after going Supernova increased by 10, while Flame Tornado now inflicts 120 damage per second instead of 100.
Prior to this update, Human Torch was already a feared character in Marvel Rivals. This was mostly due to his Blazing Blast ability, which can create a Flame Field to engulf the battle and deal huge damage to anyone caught in it.

If there was one drawback, it’s that his other abilities felt weak in comparison. But once this update goes live, this issue will be addressed in a big way, giving players who main the character more cause for celebration, and those who don’t more reasons to fear him.
We expect Human Torch to take over the meta going forward, but with Season 2 on the horizon and new characters coming with it, his reign at the top might not last long.
